As soon as you walk into the Girls Leadership Academy of Wilmington (GLOW), you notice: this school is different. Co-founded by retired Food Network President Judy Girard, this tuition-free public charter school has a commercial kitchen and a television studio, giving students the opportunity to prepare for careers in culinary arts and the media. Rachel Ray and Emeril Lagasse even hosted fundraisers at the school – so don’t be surprised if you spot a familiar face. But for students at this all-girls school, none of this beats the real impact: a school where they belong and have a hand in shaping what’s next.

A retired Food Network president co-founded North Carolina's only tuition-free girls school in 2016. Here's how it's impacted Wilmington over 10 years.

Two educators at Walter L. Cohen College Prep High School, a public charter school in New Orleans, noticed a pattern: too many students were accepted to college, but not making it to graduation. So they took action and founded College Beyond, a nonprofit created to help students persist and complete their college degree. The organization works to combat the “summer melt” by connecting directly with students, meeting them where they are, and building trusting relationships.

“For students who don't have someone they can call to talk to, the process can be really overwhelming,” said Clara Baron-Hyppolite, executive director of College Beyond, one of several organizations across the state helping students graduate college.

Starting in January, a new federal program will give Americans a dollar-for-dollar tax credit of up to $1,700 for contributions to eligible scholarship granting organizations. The Federal Scholarship Tax Credit is set to unleash unprecedented resources for students nationwide -- and all public schools, including public charter schools, will benefit. Today, Bluum -- an Idaho nonprofit -- announced its intention to become a scholarship granting organization, giving more families the opportunity to benefit.

The program lets residents redirect up to $1,700 through approved organizations that fund educational opportunities.
