🎉 Big news! 🎉 DC Greens and Capital Area Food Bank are teaming up to bring fresh, affordable groceries to D.C. through our Produce Rx program!

DC Greens and Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) have joined forces to make healthy food more accessible for residents in communities where grocery options are limited. Participants in DC Greens’ Produce Rx program can now shop at any of CAFB’s Curbside Groceries locations, expanding fresh produce options in D.C.

“We are thrilled to expand our partnership with the Capital Area Food Bank and work together on this initiative,” said DC Greens Food Is Medicine Manager, Luisa Furstenberg-Beckman. “This collaboration gives our participants a convenient and affordable way to shop for fresh fruits and vegetables while also strengthening our local food system and supporting a trusted community organization.”

Curbside Groceries is a mobile grocery store delivering quality produce, meat, shelf-stable items and more to communities without a traditional, brick-and-mortar supermarket. It was created by the Capital Area Food Bank in response to clients’ calls for reliable access to fresh food for purchase near where people live and work.

"Access to fresh, nutritious produce is essential for maintaining good health and well-being,” said Molly McGlinchy, Deputy Chief of Programs and Innovation at the Capital Area Food Bank. “We're proud to be partnering with DC Greens to make it easier for our neighbors to purchase the fresh fruits and vegetables needed to manage their health conditions and to live strong, active lives."

The partnership expands Produce Rx shopping options to CAFB’s mobile grocery stores, bringing affordable fresh food directly into D.C. neighborhoods.

Many have seen the news about the Big Beautiful Bill and the impacts it will have on SNAP and Medicaid. For our community, this isn’t abstract — 100% of our Produce Rx participants are DC Medicaid recipients or enrolled in DC Health Care Alliance. In our most recent cohort, 51% received SNAP and 81% faced barriers to food access.

We know firsthand how vital these programs are in helping families prioritize healthy eating as part of their well-being and care for their loved ones.

🥬 If you need assistance, we encourage you to visit LinkU, a resource that can help you find not only food but also housing, health, and other vital resources. Access it by clicking here: https://linkudmv.org/

💡If you want to learn more about how food access programs can improve the quality of life for an individual or household, we encourage you to read our latest Produce Rx report with data and stories from our 2023–2024 cohort of 800+ participants. Finally, we want to echo a comment made recently by one of DC Greens’ staff members: D.C. residents are eager to prioritize their health. They just need a way to make it possible.

Food is health. Food is medicine. Food is a human right.

In her latest post, DC Greens staff member, Amniche Guerin, reflects on the cooking gender gap, and the beauty and power of more inclusive cooking cultures.

"Growing up, I saw gender roles both reinforced and reimagined in the kitchen. My mother’s family relied on my grandmother to handle meals, and now, with her illness, my grandfather finds himself depending on others, a reminder of how deeply cooking skills can shape independence and health. At the same time, my father — though often busy with work — cooked when he could and remains the main grocery shopper in our home. And I have vivid memories of some of my grandmother’s brothers cooking side-by-side during big family gatherings. These experiences taught me that cooking doesn’t have to belong to just one person or gender. Every family is different, and cultural norms, schedules, and relationships all shape who cooks. But there’s room for all of us to grow and contribute."

We're pleased to share that our 2024–2025 Produce Rx Quarter 2 report is now available and showing incredible results. Available to DC Medicaid patients with diet-related chronic illnesses, Produce Rx by DC Greens allows health care providers to prescribe fresh fruits and vegetables to improve patient health outcomes.

In Q2 alone, participants spent over $88,000 on fresh fruits and vegetables. We have more than 400 residents enrolled from all eight wards — and redemption rates are soaring above 75%.

"The high utilization rates seen in our Quarter 2 report demonstrate that D.C. residents are eager to prioritize their health — they just need a way to make it possible.” —Carolina Moppett, DC Greens Produce Rx Coordinator

: DC Greens staffer Price Holman reflects on organizing and hosting our April event, "Farm to Fire":

"As an advisor for The Well at Oxon Run, my role is about being a bridge builder between the organization and the community. I am always thinking about ways to connect programming to people. I constantly ask myself: How can our programs serve each other? How can we nourish our community through the entire growing process and life cycle of a single vegetable?"
