Yesterday, we had the pleasure of attending the Preservation Roundtable hosted by the National Preservation Institute(NPI) and the Preservation Action Foundation.

This gathering of preservation professionals featured an inspiring presentation by Kelly Whitton, Regional Opportunities Manager – Mid-Atlantic The Durable Restoration Company. Kelly shared valuable insights into the many opportunities for expanding and strengthening careers in the historic trades.

Trades training and apprenticeship programs create much-needed pathways to diverse employment opportunities while helping to preserve our historic built environment for future generations.

Thank you to NPI, Preservation Action Foundation, The Durable Restoration Company, The Campaign for Historic Trades, and Preservation Maryland for fostering these important conversations and highlighting the vital role of historic trades in preserving our shared heritage.

Last week, we had the opportunity to visit the offices of our project architect, Cunningham | Quill Architects, located within historic Canal Square in Georgetown, a pioneering example of the adaptive reuse of a former warehouse building along the C&O Canal.

The visit gave our summer architecture intern the chance to learn more about CQA’s diverse practice, explore different career pathways within the profession, and hear about the firm’s efforts to advance diversity and equity in architecture.

Thank you to the CQA team for such a warm welcome and an inspiring visit.

Meet our 2026 summer intern, Shruti!

Shruti recently completed her first year at the University of Virginia School of Architecture and is a graduate and scholarship recipient of the ACE DC Mentor Program. As an architecture student, Shruti is passionate about the intersection of design and history.

In her words: "Historic preservation has always been a part of architecture for me; a space means nothing without its history. I strongly believe that by preserving it, we as a community have the power to create architecture that looks toward the future by recognizing the past."

We're excited to have Shruti with us this summer and look forward to sharing more about her experience at The L’Enfant Trust!

Join the Latrobe Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians on June 17 for a lecture on the historic Peirce-Klingle Mansion in Rock Creek Park.

In May, The L’Enfant Trust staff had the unique opportunity to travel to Dublin, Ireland, to participate in an advisor exchange program with heritage professionals hosted by The 1772 Foundation, Inc.

We were inspired by conversations about the adaptive reuse of historic buildings and the role preservation and heritage organizations can play in addressing housing needs, neighborhood revitalization, and community engagement—themes that are central to the Trust’s own Historic Properties Redevelopment Program in Washington, DC.

We are grateful to The 1772 Foundation, Inc. and Mary Anthony for sponsoring this exceptional professional opportunity and for championing the cross-cultural exchange of ideas and preservation best practices among heritage organizations.

We kicked off at the DC History Conference! Presented by the DC History Center, DC Public Library, and Humanities DC, the DC History Conference is the largest annual gathering for and -minded Washingtonians.

During the networking session, we connected with attendees and shared resources on our Conservation Easement and Historic Properties Redevelopment Programs - great conversations all around!
