and its surrounding areas.........."A PERSON WITHOUT A CULTURE IS A PERSON WITHOUT A SOUL" - SHURWAYNE WI******ER Maintaining our culture consist of informal events, fundraisers, festivities, and our annual Caribbean Carnival better known in the area as "Caribbean Day" that is held during the nations own "Caribbean-American Heritage Month" of June since 1993. Different cultures express themselves
differently.......
Caribbean culture expresses best through Music & Craft. There are plenty of local cultural and informal events/festivities held in the capitol like "Barbecue Battles, Cancer Walk-a-thons, Halloween Festivals, & Latin Festivals. Those are just a few to name, but the most known cultural festival our own annual "Caribbean Day" which has been a D.C. tourist & locals main summer "must attend" event since 1993, has disappeared from the D.C. Even with the familiar issues previous years the event still took place, however the year of 2012 the plug was pulled. The issues consist of lack of local and national support/sponsorship, There are plenty supporters in the local community, Caribbean and American. That's not enough, other similar festivals held in other large cities across the North American Region like Brooklyn, Miami, Toronto, Boston, Hartford, Baltimore, Atlanta, etc. embraces this cultural festivity of music, craft, food, unity, and most of all freedom, but only with the help of sponsors/supporters do they succeed to continue on year after year and grow larger and larger. Miami's Broward Carnival in October, New York's West Indian Labor Day Parade, and Toronto's Caribana are the largest held in the Americas; as you can imagine it is a costly event, but its also a economic PLUS for the community that's why in other cities that hold the festival they support it and why small/large companies/businesses sponsor the festivals. grew from roughly 6 bands in 1993 to 20-30 bands throughout the past years with an attendance of over 500,000. However this year due to the issues mentioned we combined our festival with Maryland's own city of Baltimore's "Caribbean Day" festival which was successful. We need to bring our festival back to home base in D.C., that's our main concern and goal at the moment! We are currently planning a few upcoming events in the mere future to spread our message and bring in support....
