Ahmad was forced to flee because of his art and his sexuality.

Growing up stateless in a refugee camp, he spent much of his life without a place he could truly call home.

But he found belonging through dance. A self-taught dancer, Ahmad auditioned for the Enana Dance Theater in Damascus, Syria when he was sixteen and earned a spot in the company. Today, he performs on stages around the world.

“I feel my body is actually my home as a dancer,” Ahmad reflects. “Wherever I go, I learned how to adapt. I learned how to include myself. I learned how to belong. Wherever there is a dance studio, wherever there is a theater, that's home.

Meet Ahmad: an internationally acclaimed ballet dancer, choreographer and humanitarian. Learn more about his journey to finding dance, hope, and pride.

Our message is simple: Civilians and humanitarian workers must be protected.

UNHCR is appalled by recent attacks on aid operations in Ukraine and the rising civilian toll of the war.

A UNHCR-contracted warehouse in Dnipro was hit in an airstrike, destroying essential aid items — including shelter materials, blankets and hygiene kits — meant for displaced and war-affected families.

On May 20, a warehouse in Dnipro, eastern Ukraine, leased by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, was directly hit by a missile in a Russian airstrike on the city. UNHCR extends its deepest condolences to the loved ones of those affected by this attack, and indeed by all strikes against civilians.

“By working directly with the community, we tapped into so much volunteer spirit and energy,” Adam shares. “Working with refugees every day in the camps, helping them come together and just seeing what issues were in their community, but very much approaching it from a perspective of, ‘Okay, what can the community do for itself?’”

Adam Nord is a UNHCR Protection Officer who has worked in refugee camps around the world. He has worked closely with refugees through community-based protection programs, which rely on the experiences and expertise of displaced people to address problems in their community. This approach offers sustainable, long-term solutions that prioritize the needs of refugees themselves while maintaining their dignity and safety.

UNHCR’s community-based protection approach centers refugee voices and creates sustainable solutions to problems identified by refugees themselves.

For many refugee women and girls, the cost or lack of sanitary pads can mean missing school, staying home or facing even greater risks.

In Nigeria, Cameroonian refugee women are helping change that by learning to make reusable sanitary pads and sharing that knowledge with their communities.

This Menstrual Hygiene Day, we’re reminded that access to menstrual health support and feminine hygiene products is about dignity, safety and opportunity!

The stark reality for many girls in Nigeria, especially vulnerable groups like refugees, is that their lives are put on hold when they menstruate. For fear of ridicule, some girls avoid school and other social activities during menstruation, especially in cultures where menstruation is stigmatised.
