During the month of February, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters proudly celebrates Black History Month and honors the sacrifices African Americans have made to our union, the greater labor movement, and our nation.

Since our founding in 1903, the Teamsters have fought to expand racial equality in the workplace and broader society. Teamsters were among the first to advocate against “color lines” in the labor movement, which had segregated unions in the early 20th century, and fight for equal pay provisions in contracts as early as 1917. Teamsters also marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the front lines of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, forming a special relationship that we continue to honor through the dedicated work of the Teamsters Human Rights and Diversity Commission.

Black History is Teamsters History. The Teamsters are committed to uplifting Black voices in our union and educating members and their families on the important relationship between labor and civil rights.

The Teamsters are proud to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his legacy of fighting for workers regardless of race, religion, or creed. Dr. King, an honorary Teamster, gave his life while supporting striking sanitation union members in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1968. Then and now, the Teamsters continue this crusade of fighting for the dignity and respect of all working people, including those in the waste, recycling, and sanitation industry.

Through the efforts of the Teamsters Human Rights and Diversity Commission, our union remains committed to honoring Dr. King’s legacy and educating members on his life and work. The Teamsters will continue to lead the fight for economic justice for workers and their families across North America.
