It is a dynamic, progressive union that provides workers a voice at work. The Utility Workers Union of America, AFL-CIO (UWUA) is one of the most successful and progressive unions in all of the labor movement. We have around 45,000 members working in the electric, gas, water, renewable and nuclear industries across the United States. Our influence is not just felt by our numbers; it is recognized

that the UWUA is both innovative and relentless in our interest in and ability to protect utility jobs, and the wages, benefits and working conditions that our members enjoy in their jobs. We are committed to a job well done and dedicated to improving the lives of our UWUA members and their families, indeed, all working families. The UWUA knows that our strength lies with our membership, so every decision we make, every negotiation we take part in, and every initiative we put in place is done with the advancement and well being of thousands of UWUA members, retirees and their families in mind. We have invested a great deal of time and money in a variety of programs, such as safety and health training, legislative affairs, and benefits plans, so that our members will be protected on the job and in their paychecks. We are extremely proud of the great advancements the UWUA has made and very excited about what will surely be a bright and prosperous future.

This Day in Labor History | May 29, 1941
Animators at Walt Disney Studios began a five-week strike demanding union recognition from the Screen Cartoonists’ Guild. Their successful action became a landmark moment for labor rights in the animation industry and a powerful reminder that collective action drives change.

Great work to UWUA Local 1-2 for advocating on behalf of utility workers across New York state!

Shoutout to the “Jessica team” — Jessica Ramos and Jessica Scarcella-Spanton — for standing with labor and backing our bills. Strong leadership means supporting the people who build, maintain, and power our communities every day, and both of these leaders continue to show up for union workers.

An interview with Darryl Taylor’s great-niece, Howard University student Anyea Fields, reminded him why the labor movement must strengthen its presence on college campuses.
Anyea’s story, shaped by loss, service, and advocacy, reflects the next generation of labor leadership rooted in lived experience, collective action, and justice. Through her work at Howard and with the National Council of Negro Women, she is developing the same skills that sustain strong unions: coalition-building, organizing, and leading with purpose.
As Anyea says, “Everyone faces a struggle, but not everyone has an advocate. I’ve decided to be that advocate.”
The future of labor is already rising on our campuses.

This month is Mental Health Awareness Month.
We stand for workplaces where people feel safe asking for help, supported through difficult moments, and valued beyond their productivity.
Stress, burnout, anxiety, grief, and depression affect working people across every industry, and no one should have to face those challenges alone.
Checking in on a union family member, taking time to care for yourself, and speaking openly about mental health can make a real difference.
We believe solidarity means showing up for one another on the job and beyond it.

On this day in 1945, Hawai’i’s “Little Wagner Act” was signed, guaranteeing pineapple and sugar workers the right to bargain collectively. This worker victory was the result of a 79-day strike that shut down 33 of the 34 plantations. Their collective action won higher wages and the 40-hour workweek. ✊🌺
