Skate Girls Tribe was formed in the DC area to foster positive values and lifestyles for girls, to create a setting and healthy environment for girls to become empowered and mature, having an outlet to meet other girls in a constructive and encouraging manner. Teaching dignity and respect for one’s self as well as for others, SGT promotes confidence and assertiveness, individuality and creativity,

strength and dignity, all gathered together with a love for skateboarding. With a vigorous setting of play and sociality, SGT nurtures and sustains these values and goals. With these virtues in place, we believe that healthy and responsible choices will be made in their lives. The tribe, created by DC-based sPACYcLOUd street and skate wear, is emblematic of the most powerful prayer in the Lakota Native American expression "Mitakuye Oyasin " which translates as we are all connected, so honor and respect all life.

Skateboarder Chrissy "Sosii" Brown will be joined by Warren A. Brown,
Attorney at Law, Marvin "Doc" Cheatham, President of the Matthew Henson
Neighborhood Association, former Senator Barbara A. Robinson, , President of Skatepark of Baltimore, “Oueen" owner of SOMD OG ROLLERS Skate Team and youth representatives of the skateboarding, BMX,
roller-skating and scooter community to call upon the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks (BCRP) to follow through with their promise to construct a public concrete skatepark in West Baltimore.
The Skatepark of Baltimore (SOB) has been working with the Matthew A. Henson community and BCRP since 2018 to gamer community support,
identify a site, secure funding and complete the designs for a new public
concrete skatepark and basketball court in Easterwood Park located at 1522 N Bentalou St., directly across from Carver Vo Tech High School. BCRP requested and received $300,000 in FY20 and $850,000 in FY22
Capital Budgets to investigate and design a small skatepark in West Baltimore and design and build a new basketball court in Easterwood Park adjacent to the existing North court. The new court was to replace the existing basketball
court that was to be removed to accommodate the new skatepark. These two allocations totaled $1,150,000 and represented an opportunity to bring the very first skatepark to a predominantly African American community that has been historically disinvested. Presently, all four city-owned skateparks are located in predominantly white communities. In July 2022 representatives of SOB were notified in a closed meeting with BCRP and a State leader that the project would not be moving forward in favor of "overall" park improvements. Supports of the project will gather in front of City Hall on Monday, October 3, 2022 at 4:30pm to call for an explanation and demand accountability on behalf of the community as to why the skatepark
that was planned and "shovel ready" was unexpectedly called off after 5 years of advocacy. Failure to move forward with this project is just another example of the
inequity in recreational opportunities across the city and broken promises to
the community.
