FEA is honored to announce Kurt L. Schmoke as this year's Fritz Kaufmann Award recipient, who will be honored at FEA's Scholar Gala this Thursday, November 19th.
Throughout his distinguished career in education, government, and law, President Schmoke has championed greater opportunity and stronger communities. Before joining the University of Baltimore as President in 2014, he served for 12 years as Mayor of Baltimore, was the Baltimore State's Attorney, and held several leadership positions at Howard University, including Interim Provost and Dean of the School of Law.
As an attorney, President Schmoke has provided countless hours of pro bono legal services to charitable organizations, and is the recipient of the President's National Literacy Award for his efforts to promote adult literacy.
Through decades of public service, President Schmoke has advanced education, literacy, civil rights, fair housing, public health, and economic development. As a Rhodes Scholar who pursued graduate studies at the University of Oxford, he also understands firsthand the lasting value of an international educational experience.
