GirlsUP, founded by the late Kelly Murray, PhD, is an extraordinary program aimed at fostering a robust sense of strength, character and spirit in girls ages 10-13. Immersed in a culture that too often values appearance over substance, gratification over responsibility, and popularity over character; girls are inundated with messages, media and images which influence who they are and, more importa

ntly, who they think they should want to be. Through an interactive and dynamic series of discussions and activities, the program encourages girls to construct healthy self-images, think creatively, communicate effectively, assess choices critically and develop an authentic self-assurance. GirlsUP provides a unique opportunity for a girl to develop a true sense of self, find her own voice, and, in the empowering words of Helen Keller, “look the world straight in the eye.”

First Black Woman to Appear on the US Quarter. Maya Angelou is making history once again. The late poet and civil rights activist has become the first black woman to be featured on the US quarter. The US mint is honoring 20 trailblazing women on the new series of coins starting with the beloved poet released on January 10th, 2022.
