From our friends at Anacostia Watershed Society:

The LGBTQIA+ community has long shaped environmental movements while bearing the brunt of the effects of climate change. Rachel Carson, a q***r woman who made her home in the Anacostia watershed, authored Silent Spring, the book that ignited the modern environmental movement in the 60s and 70s. Countless q***r and trans scholars, scientists, and activists have followed in her footsteps.

Q***r and trans folks also face disproportionate houselessness, financial instability, and discrimination, leaving them with fewer resources to weather climate impacts. Though they make up only about 7% of the population, they represent 40% of unhoused youth. They are also three times more likely to live in coastal areas threatened by sea level rise.

The climate crisis will not affect all q***r and trans folks in the same way. Those with multiple marginalized identities, particularly Black and trans folks, face even greater vulnerability to homelessness, poverty, and food insecurity.

AWS is committed to supporting the LGBTQIA+ community both inside and outside the workplace. We recognize that climate justice and social justice are deeply connected and that building a more equitable and sustainable future means showing up for the communities most impacted. AWS is proud to stand with the LGBTQIA+ community in that work.
