How prepared is the nation for disease outbreaks, natural disasters, and other health emergencies?

Trust for America's Health's new report, Ready or Not 2026: Protecting the Public's Health from Diseases, Disasters, and Bioterrorism, evaluates all 50 states and the District of Columbia across 10 indicators of emergency preparedness and outlines steps policymakers can take to strengthen readiness.

The report finds wide variation across states and warns that national preparedness depends not only on state capacity, but also on strong and stable federals systems, sustained coordination across levels of government, and long-term investment in public health infrastructure.
