📌On my way to drop off an online delivery, I decided to write down some thoughts which have been on my mind for a couple of weeks. With what’s been going on in the world now, I feel extremely lucky and proud at the moment because we are still able to produce our in-house products which are made with simple and local products. Thus, we were able to keep our words for what CSM was built for since 2019. Unlike other vendor, We have been making our products from the scratch including the dough and wrappers. For our dumpling wrappers and noodles, ingredients include only flour, salt, sugar, and water. We are constantly discussing the local flour quality, and the ratio with our dough and flour partner - the hardcore baker ( thanks Chris for your endless patience with us !) I want to say that it is very hard but meaningful to do so. I want to take a moment to appreciate the local small business that made our daily life easier and the community prosperous. We are in this together and we will surely be supportive to each other. . - A luxurious morning that we don’t have to go to a market. 4.13.25

📌The Third Chinese Solar Term : Insects Awakening 惊蛰节气Mar 5th - 6th. During Insects Awakening Term, the Qi of liver is gradually flourishing. To suppress the rising Yang and protect Yin for your inner balance, the daily food consumption plan is good to include ingredients such as wolfberry, cordyceps, ginseng, silver ear, quail, duck meat, beef backbone, sea cucumber, crab meat, turtle, shiitake mushroom, etc. These ingredients are light and will nourish the liver. As the Chinese old saying goes: nourish your Insects Awakening Term, keep illness away for rest of the year.

Suggested up-keeping activities: Joint massage, foot bath, acupoint tapping. Excited activities which improve blood circulation, reduce lower limb stiffness. When the blood Qi rises, your body has better resistance and energy.

📌We are very excited to collaborate with Ms. Qiqing , a New York City based awards winning artist this upcoming Chinese New Year celebration. She will be teaching us how to make clay fortune cookies with Chinese tassels from scratch!!!!! 🥠🥠🥠

The lore of the fortune cookie lives in Chinese culture, although perhaps not always in the shape of a cookie. One such example comes as a popular Chinese New Year tradition - the person preparing the New Year Eve’s dumplings inserts a coin into one of the many dumplings prepared for the anticipated dinner. It is said that whoever happens to eat that coin inserted dumpling will have the best luck in the New Year. Fortune cookies hold a similar aura of prophecy, and their fortune messages are even more specific. Varieties include Chinese numerologies, Chinese language learning, Chinese philosophy and more. Some said there are over 15,000 different messages printed on different small slips of paper that eventually end up on a busy restaurant table or in a brown paper carryout bag.

Today, fortune cookies have become the symbol of American Chinese food culture in the United States. At Chinese Street Market, we want to include them in our food diplomacy events. A food item that was not born in China but is integral to the Chinese diaspora, it is still an important aspect of tradition and culture. No matter where this little cookie was born, it is now seen as part of the food culture here in the United States and the fortune message itself is seen to spread many deep Chinese philosophies. In this workshop our special guest Ms Qiqing will be leading us through a step by step tutorial on how to create a clay fortune cookie from scratch! Now you don’t have to eat these cookies but use them like best wish ornaments.

💌“ Are you familiar with the Chinese 24 Solar Terms? We are delighted to announce that our very own Chinese Street Market guest chef, Chef Jing, is launching a family-friendly menu tasting series based off of this ancient calendar just in time for Father’s Day!

Chef Jing is ready to bring you along on a journey to explore a delicately curated six course tasting menu centered on traditional dishes of the Chinese Dragon Boat festival. A highlight of this segment’s tasting menu is the Zong Zi - a type of sticky rice dumpling that is quintessential to this mid year festival.

To bring in the essence of early summer, Chef Jing has expertly incorporated the Lotus plant as a strong theme throughout the menu. A long standing symbol of summer in Chinese culture, the Lotus plant leads us into this warm and sweet season!

Join us as we bask in the essence of the early days of summer, and bring a dad in your life along for this exciting new endeavor! Get ready to dip your toes into the waters on Sunday, June 16th.

All are welcome to gather with us to enjoy this important delicacy in Chinese culture.

🌸《桃花源记》, The Spring Peach Blossoms Story, a poem by a famous Ancient Chinese poet. It was my memories of little pink flowers at Flower Fairies Spring Festival back home🌸peach blossoms, cherry blossom or plum blossoms? Do you have the same questions as us when you see these different types of pink blossoms popping around the city? My personal favorites are the peach blossoms because those are seen the most in Ancient Chinese poetries. But how can you tell these pink flowers apart? Hmmm, we think it is mostly by the shapes of their petals. Read here to find out more https://www.chinesestreetmarket.com/foodculture/cherry-blossom-and-more.

Our Story

The Chinese Street Market DC strives to become a platform for the DC multi-generation East Asian immigrants, providing them online and offline showcases for the food and traditional recipes handed down throughout the generations. The vision of the market is to start pooling talent from the DMV area and eventually host a market space for this talent. The inaugural street market, held in September 2019, was a special event that drew over 3,000 visitors in just one afternoon. Following on that success, Chinese Street Market moved ahead with its online-to-offline market platform via a weekly presence at farmers markets throughout DC. A second street market event is currently in planning and the date is TBD. At the farmers market locations, a variety of regional and traditional dishes are available as ready-to-cook packaged products, all of which are made using local and seasonal produce. Trash Panda is the pilot vendor and new recipe lab space for Chinese Street Market’s local showcase platform via a weekly popup at Showtime Bar in DC.
