Meet Logan, one of our summer fellows at the DC State Board of Education! She is a rising sophomore at Temple University and this is her second year as a Mikva Challenge Summer Fellow.

Logan has conducted policy research on education issues affecting D.C. students and presented student policy recommendations to D.C. Councilmembers. One of her highlights has been building professional connections while gaining firsthand experience in education policy and local government.

A fun fact about Logan is that she is a lifestyle and beauty social media creator 🤳

Mikva Challenge would like to extend a huge thank you to our Summer Fellow hosts and students who made this year a success!

The young people have all expressed immense gratitude for the valuable experiences they had over the summer and our summer fellow host have shared how impactful it has been to have youth voice included in their work ♥️

We are grateful for all of the time and energy both our fellows and hosts have put into this program and hope to stay connected.

Meet Eva, one of our DCPS Learning and Development Sciences summer fellows! Eva is a rising senior at Benjamin Banneker Academic High School and a returning Safety and Justice Council member.

Over the summer, Eva worked on the planning of the DCPS New Educator Orientation, the Summer Leadership Institute and the Culture Institute for DCPS support teams; ensuring student voice is amplified in those spaces. One of her highlights of the summer has been meeting DC Councilmember Zachary Parker.

Eva’s advice for future summer fellows is to “SPEAK UP! You never know how your words or actions can impact the environment around you, or what opportunities become available when you put yourself out there.” 📣

Meet Owen, one of our DC State Board of Education Summer Fellows! He is a rising senior at Benjamin Banneker Academic High School and a returning Safety and Justice Council member.

Over the summer, he worked alongside Logan in conducting policy research on education issues affecting D.C. students and presenting student policy recommendations to D.C. Councilmembers. One of his biggest highlights was that “he gained insight on how to make policy more actionable.”

Owen’s advice for future summer fellows is to “do the research necessary for your project or presentation, but also trust that lived experience also has value and that every student has their own unique perspective.” 📣

Mikva Challenge Summer Fellows visited Magistrate Judge Faruqui at the United States District Court to participate in a mock trial centered on student rights and network with civic partners in the law profession.

“One of the most memorable parts of this experience for me was getting to argue in front of a real judge. As a person interested in law it was a great experience to picture myself in a court room” - Owen, a Mikva Summer Fellow

Thank you to Judge Faruqui and Kristin at the District Court for making this annual experience happen for our young people!
