After a long absence, we're back – new and improved d – having merged with Northern Busbarn Neighbors (NBN), after WMATA announced just over 1-year ago that they were going to tear down the old facility and put up a new one; they left in June 2019.
After CM Todd and ANC/SMD 4C02 Commissioner Barry turned their backs on this community in favor of 16th St. NA, CAUFS and UMS, 1-4 UBA and NBN found common ground in our collective goals and objectives.
OUR GOAL: To stop the return of 150 diesel-fueled buses, a bodyshop and a spray paint booth from returning to the 14th St. bus garage sometime in 2025-2026.
OUR OBJECTIVE: To be a healthier community.
Our singular purpose is to educate all of us on the continuing dangers and health risk to people and pets when we're all exposed to diesel fumes and they're "close-in cousin," diesel particulate matter – DPM – the former attacking us near and far, while the latter is a "close-in killer” – it's heavier and doesn't travel far – gets in the blood stream and won't – can't – get out.
WMATA is revamping its crumbling northern bus garage on 14th Street using state-of-the-art “green” construction and electric systems. The proposed new garage will bring retail to enliven the street, but many residents are disappointed it won't replace polluting diesel buses with electric ones.
