Each year, the National Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates spring in Washington, DC, the gift of the cherry blossom trees, and the enduring friendship between the people of the United States and Japan. Meet Matt Long, the Frederick, Maryland-based multimedia artist who was selected as the Official Artist of the 2020 National Cherry Blossom Festival!

Matt Long is a graphic designer and artist known for his vibrant colors, fluid forms, and expressive style, often inspired by nature, music, and the outdoors. Using acrylic paints and Sharpie markers, he brings his creations to life with a signature sense of movement and energy.

For his Official Festival Artwork, he drew inspiration from the delicate beauty of cherry blossoms, their brilliant pink hues, and the joyful atmosphere of springtime celebrations in Washington, DC. His design captures not just the flowers themselves, but the colorful, lively spirit of the Festival!

As the 2014 Official Artist for the National Cherry Blossom Festival, Evelia Sowash drew inspiration from the natural world and a rich history of artistic traditions to create her Festival artwork.

An artist and designer from Mansfield, Ohio, Sowash founded Evelia Designs, LLC in 2007, combining her commercial art experience with her fine art training to create illustrations and print materials. Her work blends modern composition with natural subjects, often featuring animals, birds, and aquatic life.

For her Festival artwork, she looked to Chinese and Japanese block prints, early American illustrators Howard Pyle and N. C. Wyeth, and the Arts and Crafts and Prairie Style movements. These influences come together through decorative patterns, natural elements, and a sense of tradition, creating a distinctive piece in the Festival’s artistic history. 🌸

Phyllis Saroff was selected as the Official Artist of the 2007 National Cherry Blossom Festival! 🌸 Saroff’s design brings Washington, DC, to life with a whimsical composition featuring the Washington Monument surrounded by blooming cherry blossoms. A Japanese kite, parasol, and musical instruments float throughout the scene, capturing the festive spirit and cultural traditions that make the Festival so special. She is a freelance illustrator based in Annapolis, Maryland. Growing up in a family of scientists, she spent her childhood around animals, creeks, and woods. Her work combines insightful observations of the natural world with a playful style. She illustrates children’s books and magazines, as well as scientific and educational materials. Through her art, Saroff invites viewers to look closely and find wonder in the natural world.

Celebrating the artistry of Peter Max ! Born in Berlin in 1937, Peter Max was a renowned pop artist known for his vibrant colors, cosmic-inspired imagery, and imaginative compositions that captured the spirit of the 1960s. In 2012, he was named the Official Artist of the National Cherry Blossom Festival’s centennial celebration, commemorating 100 years of the cherry trees and the friendship between the United States and Japan. His colorful artwork honored the Festival’s iconic cherry blossoms and the enduring cultural connection they represent. Though Peter Max passed away this year, his legacy lives on through his art, and we continue to celebrate his creativity and contribution to the National Cherry Blossom Festival🌸

As we celebrate the Fourth of July, we're reflecting on the Festival season that honored both the beauty of spring and the spirit of America's 250th anniversary. ❤️🤍💙🌸

Over the course of this semi quincentennial year, we unveiled our 2026 Official Artwork, America in Bloom, which celebrates America with images and song lyrics; honored the anniversary through the Blossom Kite Festival's "Red, White & Bloom" Kite makers' Competition theme; and partnered with the Daughters of the American Revolution National Headquarters) to host our Opening Ceremony and have a "Our Nation's Legacy in Bloom" float in the Parade, bringing the America250 story to life along Constitution Avenue. This season has been filled with meaningful moments that connected our shared history with the promise of the future.

We're proud to continue celebrating the people, traditions, and stories that make our nation and the Festival — in FULL BLOOM.

As we look ahead to 2027, we'll celebrate an incredible milestone of our own: the 100th Anniversary of the first celebration of the cherry blossoms. We can't wait to welcome everyone as we honor a century of blossoms, friendship, culture, and unforgettable springtime traditions.
