Here's a look at our night with the Washington Spirit 👟🌸🖌️⚽

Our Blossom Kicks for Kids Program, presented by Events DC, gave DC students the opportunity to let their creativity bloom on a pair of cleats in celebration of cherry blossom season.

This year's theme, “Art of the Game,” celebrated young female athletes and student creators across DC by using soccer and design as vehicles for creativity and self-expression.

Of the 150 students who submitted designs, 25 students in grades 5–8 from all eight DC wards were selected to spend an afternoon at Audi Field bringing their ideas to life alongside local artist David “DEZ” Zambrano (Dez Customz)

This past weekend, the students were invited to a Washington Spirit match at Audi Field to bring their artwork to the pitch for the team's "Youth Night" celebration. With autographed cleats and a Spirit win, we can all agree it was the perfect finale to this year's program.

It takes countless volunteer hours to help the National Cherry Blossom Festival bloom. We appreciate everyone who dedicates their time to welcoming attendees, ensuring the events run smoothly, and working behind the scenes.

Each year, we honor three volunteers with the Barbara Erlich Volunteer of the Year (BEVY) Awards in honor of Barbara Erlich, a longtime Festival Board Member and volunteer who embodies the spirit of the Festival. These volunteers were nominated by a combination of fellow volunteers and Festival staff in recognition of their commitment and passion.

Help us congratulate this year's winners:

🌸BEVY Award Winner: Rhonna Bollig🌸
Beginning in 2006, she dedicated 10 consecutive years of service before moving away for work and returned to volunteering again in 2025 after moving back to the DMV area. Nominators described her as upbeat, welcoming, and dependable, highlighting her positive attitude, willingness to jump in wherever needed, calm problem-solving skills, and the way her presence made the experience better for everyone around her.

🌸BEVY Rising Blossom Award Winner: Daniela Gamez🌸
In her first-year volunteering with the Festival, she dedicated more than 40 hours supporting events. Nominators praised her enthusiasm, kindness, and initiative, noting that she consistently looked for ways to help and demonstrated a strong passion for learning more about the Festival and becoming more involved.

🌸BEVY Leadership Award Winner: Michele Brooks🌸
Since beginning her volunteer service with the Festival in 2008, she has supported nearly every community and signature event we have, while serving in leadership roles as both a lead volunteer and a Champion Volunteer during this year’s pilot program. Nominators praised her enthusiasm, welcoming spirit, and dedication to creating positive experiences for both volunteers and attendees, noting that her passion for helping others and supporting the Festival shines through in every event she serves.

Our Blossom Kicks for Kids Program, presented by Events DC is a beloved tradition where DC students let their creativity bloom on a pair of kicks to celebrate cherry blossom season. 🌸👟

This year’s theme, “Art of the Game,” celebrates young female athletes and student creators across DC, using soccer and design as vehicles for creativity and self-expression. More than 150 students submitted designs for this year’s program. Then, 25 students in grades 5–8 from all eight DC wards were selected and spent an afternoon at Audi Field bringing their ideas to life, working alongside local artist David ‘DEZ’ Zambrano (DEZ Customz) David ‘DEZ’ Zambrano to transform blank cleats into original works of art.

Now, the shoes are on display for everyone to see! Grab your sole-mates and check out the students' designs on display on the first floor of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library (DC Public Library) May 29th.
