Plans for a new submarine shipyard at Sparrows Point offer an opportunity to strengthen American shipbuilding and Maryland’s economy.

The Metal Trades Department wants to see these become union jobs—with fair wages, strong benefits, safe working conditions and a voice on the job. This investment should create a lasting pathway to the middle class for workers and their families.

Building America’s shipbuilding capacity means investing in the people who make it possible. It’s Better in a Union!

The project is expected to support 14,000 jobs, including the creation of 3,100 permanent jobs, becoming the state's largest job creator over a decade.

America needs more shipbuilding capacity — but expanding capacity cannot come at the expense of good union shipbuilding jobs.

The Navy plans to increase the amount of shipbuilding work performed at distributed sites from roughly 10% today to as much as 50%.

If taxpayer-funded work moves to new facilities, the workers performing that work should have the same opportunity for strong wages, benefits, apprenticeships and union representation.

Our skilled shipbuilding workforce is a national security asset.

Build more ships. Expand American capacity. Preserve and grow union shipbuilding jobs.

Thank you to Hanford and the HAMMER training facility for hosting the Metal Trades Department last week. MTD President Dale Troll joined fellow labor leaders for a tour of the Hanford Site and HAMMER, and attended the Medical Surveillance and Labor subcommittee meetings.

We appreciate the opportunity to see the work and training firsthand and to take part in these important discussions.
