Dolma Tsering takes the gavel of the 18th Tibetan parliament-in-exile, becoming the first woman to hold the position, marking a historic milestone.
Dharamshala, May 31, 2026: Members of the newly elected 18th Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile on Sunday elected Dolma Tsering as Speaker and Khenpo Sonam Tenphel as Deputy Speaker by secret ballot.
In the contest for the Speaker's post, Dolma Tsering secured 22 votes, narrowly defeating Khenpo Sonam Tenphel, who received 20 votes.
Following the election of the speaker, parliamentarians voted for the deputy speaker position. Khenpo Sonam Tenphel won the post with 22 votes, while his opponent, Karma Gelek, received 20 votes. According to the election results, three ballots were declared invalid during the voting process.
The elections were conducted among members of the newly constituted 18th Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile following their swearing-in ceremony.
