Guns Down America

Guns Down America Guns Down America is a national campaign to take back public life from the gun violence epidemic.

Guns Down is a bolder, broader movement calling for dramatically fewer guns in America, and for making them dramatically harder to get. We aim to provide Americans with information and advocacy tools to build support for limiting the availability of guns in America though social media and on-the-ground activism. This is a broader, more inclusive coalition that will bring in activists from the LGBT community, people of color, millennials, immigrants, and others to solve our nation's gun crisis.

The Trump administration callously took down the Faces of Gun Violence memorial at the Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms, and Explosives with no notification to the families of those lost to gun violence.

They are using “law abiding citizens” to defend the erasure of what is happening to our children, including Jaime, and subverting attention from the real beneficiaries of their disrespectful actions: the gun industry.

Want to do something to show support for survivors? Go to https://orangeribbonsforjaime.org/ to help Jaime's dad connect families suffering from gun violence with emotional companion puppies.

The fact we even have to explain why our children and educators have a right to learn, grow, and LIVE without fear of being shot is reason enough to demand action from every source of power in America, including corporate America. It takes all of us, that’s why we’re teaming up with March For Our Lives, Teachers Unify, Blue Future's Progressive Leadership Initiative Education Fund, Virginia Moms for Change, Enough of Gun Violence, Stop Handgun Violence, and many more. Guns are not inevitable, they are a choice. The majority of Americans have chosen not to bring a gun into their home and their lives are safer for it.

Most of us make that choice quietly, without any discussion or fanfare, but it’s worth remembering that we are the majority. There’s power in talking to our friends and family about what safety means to us – and why guns aren’t part of the equation.

Last night we had the privilege of attending the National Vigil for All Victims of Gun Violence, hosted by our friends at Newtown Action Alliance. Gathering together like this and hearing one incredible voice after another share their story is a moving and inspiring experience that affirms the power held by this community.

Many of the people we spent time with yesterday have experienced firsthand the heartbreak and trauma that gun violence leaves in its wake, and they have the grace and strength to fight for a better future for the next generation.

We had the honor of celebrating the success of Proposition KK this weekend, an initiative that exemplifies the best of politics: practical, grassroots and in service of the community. We were proud to support this voter-supported tax on the gun industry that will support mental health and survivor services for Coloradans — a bill that taxpayers have been footing for way too long. A major thanks to Rep. Monica Duran, Rep. Meg Froelich, and all the coalition partners for their tireless work.

How did the gun industry successfully create a consumer identity around gun ownership? How have decades of American gun culture warped our idea of public safety? Most importantly, how do we take back our country from this dangerous status quo?

We explore all this and more in the latest issue of The Hollow Point. This installment features an essay from Firmin DeBrabander, an interview with Michelle Barnhart, Brett Burkhardt, and Aimee Huff from Oregon State University, and a holiday shopping guide from the Guns Down America team.

📢 Last week, Colorado voted YES on Prop KK, a landmark move to address gun violence through a new tax on fi****ms and the gun industry. This groundbreaking initiative directs funds toward victims of crime, mental health support for veterans and youth, and critical school safety programs.

💰 Gun violence costs Colorado taxpayers $156 million every year. Prop KK delivers resources to impacted communities and holds the gun industry accountable for its role in these costs.

👏 Guns Down America is proud to have endorsed this measure, which we believe is more than just a win for Colorado—it’s a blueprint for national change. Let's build a safer, stronger future together. 💪

Veterans are over 55% more likely to die by su***de than non-veterans – and more than 70% of veterans who die by su***de use a gun. As our veterans are returning to civilian life and navigating severe mental health challenges, our country neglects to invest in essential social services or protect them from easy access to guns while they are in crisis.

It is our collective responsibility to ensure that those who have served are met with the support and resources they need to heal and thrive.
