The Rev. Raz Waff, retired U.S. Army major general and Episcopal priest, on U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's announcement that the firing squad ex*****on of a former Army major would be livestreamed: "That is not what a civilized people or nation does. There are obviously requirements for official witnesses to validate that the ex*****on took place; however, doing this in a public forum is just beyond the pale." (Interview begins at 8.11) . . . The Rt. Rev. Ann Ritonia, Episcopal Church bishop suffragan for Armed Forces and Federal Ministries, on the language in a recent speech from Hegseth: "As an Episcopal member of the church, our vows, our baptismal promises say that we'll seek and serve Christ and all people, and that we'll respect the dignity of every human being. And for somebody who calls himself a Christian, name calling, using slurs, it demeans the dignity of people. And when a leader uses that language, I think they're exercising power in a very unhealthy way because our servicemen and women deserve our utmost respect and support. They don't deserve to be demeaned or to be called names." (Interview from 11:56 to 15:40)

A look at the ethical and religious issues of the week with Emily Buchanan.

The Episcopal Church has long formally opposed the death penalty, and more recently we have called for an immediate moratorium on its use. The idea of live-streaming a firing squad ex*****on is reprehensible in the extreme and will cause moral injury to everyone involved. We need to ask ourselves who we have become as a nation when senior officials decide to make a spectacle of state-sponsored violence.

Happy 251st Birthday to the United States Navy!

Today, we honor and give thanks for all who serve at sea and around the world, and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice along with their families.

As we mark this milestone, we invite you to join us in Morning Prayer offered by Chaplain Jeffrey Quinn from the Navy Chief of Chaplain's Office.

On the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, may we remember those who were lost, honor those who served and sacrificed in the years that followed, and give thanks for those who continue to care for others in times of uncertainty and grief. May we also remember the sense of unity and common purpose that emerged from tragedy as a reminder of who we can be to one another and our call to seek peace and reconciliation as followers of Jesus Christ.
