”Ukraine and Moldova will take a decisive step towards joining the EU on Monday, as they embark on the first phase of membership negotiations. The start of substantive negotiations, launched by senior EU officials and ministers from both countries in Luxembourg on Monday, will be a highly symbolic moment for the two countries that were both part of the former Soviet Union.” - Guardian

”A new exhibition in Romania’s capital spotlights the harsh reality of interrogations carried out by the country’s notorious communist-era secret police. Held at the National History Museum of Romania in Bucharest, the exhibition is called “A. REST 1989.” The Securitate Video Archive uses video footage to reconstruct how detentions and interrogations worked under the Securitate, the sprawling network of spies that enforced Nicolae Ceaușescu’s rule, until he was overthrown and executed in December 1989.”

We are happy to share another wonderful story from our community members! This time, we are featuring Ivanna, who proudly participated in Family Heritage Month at Clermont Elementary School in Alexandria at the end of April. Ivanna was the only student representing the Republic of Moldova and also the only child at her school with Moldovan roots.

The event gave Ivanna the opportunity to introduce many of her classmates and their parents to her family’s home country — a place that many had never even heard of before. Some attendees even thought she was representing Mexico because of her colorful traditional dress and flower crown!

Ivanna was proud to share her heritage and received many compliments on her beautiful traditional attire. We are always inspired to see young members of our community celebrating and preserving their cultural roots with such joy and confidence.

If you or your children have represented Romania and/or the Republic of Moldova at a public event or at a school, please send us a message and a few photos — we would love to share them with our audiences on social media.

American Councils for International Education is seeking host families for exchange students from Romania! These students are participants of a prestigious, merit-based U.S. Department of State program called the Future Leader's Exchange (FLEX) program. They will come to the United States to attend high school, experience American culture, and share their own traditions and perspectives with their host communities. Students are academically motivated, proficient in English, and excited to build meaningful connections during their exchange year. Hosting an exchange student is a unique opportunity to: share your culture, traditions, and community; build lifelong international friendships; gain new perspectives and learn about another language and culture; and help a young person experience American life, school, and community involvement.
