Strategies for International Development (SID) develops and promotes better methods for helping poor farmers increase their income.

75% of world poverty is rural poverty, and the great majority of the rural poor are small farmers who are making the transition from subsistence to commercial farming. We help farmers meet and negotiate with buyers, make business plans, and increase productivity and product quality in response to the requirements and opportunities of their market. We also organize best practices workshops with other NGOs in each region where we work in order to share lessons learned, agree on best practices, and improve the coverage and impact of all our projects. We have programs in Guatemala, Peru, and Bolivia, the three countries in Central and South America with the greatest number of rural poor.

☕ 🌎 Happy International Coffee Day!

Today, we celebrate the coffee we love and the farmers and families whose hard work makes every cup possible.

For millions of smallholder farmers worldwide, coffee is more than a crop. It is a source of income, opportunity, and hope for a better future.

At Strategies for International Development (SID), we work alongside coffee-growing communities to help farming families increase productivity, improve quality, strengthen their businesses, and ultimately graduate from poverty.

From the coffee farms of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, to Luweero, Uganda, and Kagera, Tanzania, we are working with farmers to build lasting pathways to greater prosperity.

And the results matter. In Uganda, for example, our coffee program achieved an 8 benefit-to-cost ratio after four years of implementation.

☕ In Luweero District, Uganda, coffee farmers are showing what is possible when they have the knowledge and support to improve their farms and capture more value from their coffee ☕

Over the past year, farmers in SID's early-adopter villages made remarkable progress:

📈 Productivity increased 52%
☕ More farmers are selling higher-value FAQ Green coffee
💰 Average annual income increased from $1,214 to $1,953 per farm family.

These are not just better coffee statistics. They represent farmers building stronger businesses, increasing their resilience, and creating new opportunities for their families.

Tanzania’s coffee production is forecast to increase by more than 10% in 2026/27 as rehabilitated farms mature and strong market prices encourage new investment. It is welcome news for one of East Africa’s most important coffee-producing countries.

But sustainable growth means more than larger harvests. Farmers continue to face climate variability, fluctuating prices, and limited access to resources that can help them build resilient family-farm businesses.

At SID, we believe the long-term success of Tanzania’s coffee sector depends on the success of the families who grow it. By strengthening farmer-led development and rural livelihoods, we can help ensure that growth in coffee production creates greater opportunity for farming families.

Women make up nearly 70% of Malawi's full-time farming workforce, yet they often face greater barriers to land, finance, and agricultural resources. At the same time, climate change and food insecurity continue to place additional pressure on rural households. (UN Women)

A new Coffee Barometer report found that none of the world's 15 largest coffee roasters and traders have committed to ensuring coffee farmers earn a living income. Yet 12.5 million smallholder farming households produce most of the world's coffee, and many still live in poverty.

True sustainability is about more than traceability and environmental stewardship. It also means ensuring farming families earn enough to invest in their farms, educate their children, and build resilient livelihoods. Without prosperous farmers, the future of coffee is at risk.
