Strategies for International Development

Strategies for International Development Strategies for International Development (SID) develops and promotes better methods for helping poor farmers increase their income.

75% of world poverty is rural poverty, and the great majority of the rural poor are small farmers who are making the transition from subsistence to commercial farming. We help farmers meet and negotiate with buyers, make business plans, and increase productivity and product quality in response to the requirements and opportunities of their market. We also organize best practices workshops with oth

er NGOs in each region where we work in order to share lessons learned, agree on best practices, and improve the coverage and impact of all our projects. We have programs in Guatemala, Peru, and Bolivia, the three countries in Central and South America with the greatest number of rural poor.

At SID, farmers adopt practices that help conserve the land upon which their livelihoods depend while increasing productivity and income. By promoting sustainable agriculture, SID helps farming families build resilient futures and ensures that healthy ecosystems can continue supporting communities for generations to come.

This June 5, we celebrate the farmers whose stewardship of the land is helping create a more sustainable future for all.

Acute food insecurity remains alarmingly high and increasingly concentrated in countries facing conflict, economic shocks, and climate-related challenges. In 2025, an estimated 266 million people across 47 countries experienced acute food insecurity, nearly double the share recorded a decade ago.

Food security solutions begin at the local level. Smallholder farmers are among the most vulnerable to shocks, yet they are also essential to building resilient food systems.

At SID, we work alongside farming communities to increase productivity, strengthen incomes, and promote sustainable agricultural practices. By helping farmers adopt proven techniques and supporting community-wide adoption, we help create the conditions for long-term food security one village at a time.

Coffee is one of Tanzania’s most important export crops and a key source of income for rural families. Yet many smallholder coffee farmers face low productivity and limited access to training. SID works with farming communities to adopt improved practices that increase yields, strengthen resilience, and help coffee farming become a sustainable pathway out of poverty.

When you support SID, you help coffee-farming families in Tanzania access the technical assistance they need to increase incomes and build stronger futures. Your donation helps farmers adopt sustainable practices, improve crop value, and create lasting change across entire villages.

Research from UN Women shows that closing the gender gap in agricultural productivity could lift hundreds of thousands of people out of poverty and significantly boost economic growth. Women farmers are just as capable as men, but often lack equal access to training, resources, and opportunities.

At SID, we work to close that gap in practice. By providing hands-on technical assistance and targeted support for women’s personal and business development. We help ensure women farmers can fully participate in and benefit from agricultural growth.

Investing in women farmers isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s one of the most effective ways to build resilient communities and drive sustainable development.

Rising coffee prices are making headlines, with no prediction of dropping anytime soon. Even after tariff rollbacks, U.S. consumers are still feeling the impact of global supply shortages and record-high coffee bean prices, which take months to reach store shelves. (Reuters)

At SID, these shifts deeply impact the smallholder farmers at the heart of the coffee supply chain. By equipping farmers with the tools and training to increase productivity and resilience, we help ensure they can better navigate price volatility and build more secure livelihoods.
