As submissions open for the 2026 Paul G. Quinnett Lived Experience Writing Competition, we're continuing our look back at 2025's winners with Carrie Badillo, awarded Second Place earlier this year for her powerful piece, Tomorrow will be the day I die.

By choosing to share her story with honesty and vulnerability, Carrie shows that survival is rarely one decision made once and for all — it's made new again, moment by moment. Her experience is a powerful reminder that love and hope can take root even in the middle of grief and isolation, and that one person's willingness to speak can become another person's reason to stay.

Thank you to Carrie Badillo for trusting us with your story and for helping create a future where conversations about su***de are met with compassion, understanding, and hope.

Read Carrie’s full story or share your own at suicidology.org.

If you or someone you know is struggling, the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline is available 24/7 — call or text 988, or visit 988lifeline.org.
