Last week, Cuba’s President Miguel Díaz-Canel sat down with NBC’s Meet the Press — and refused to say he would step down even if his country’s survival depended on it.

Earlier this month, Cuba announced the release of more than 2,000 prisoners. But human rights organizations say not one of them was a political prisoner. At least 775 remain behind bars.

The release comes as Cuba continues to face severe shortages of food, fuel, and electricity — and as analysts suggest Havana may be holding political prisoners as leverage in future negotiations with Washington.

A Russian oil tanker arrived carrying 700,000 barrels of crude — a short-term fix for a structural crisis that shows no signs of resolution.

The colors of the América campaign tell a story about who we are.

The three selected colors reflect the diversity and shared humanity of the region.

Brown represents the blending of cultures and ethnicities across the Américas.

Blue evokes the sea that connects our hemisphere, beautiful, vast, and shared.

Mauve points to something deeper: the reminder that beneath our superficial differences, we are all human beings, and we bleed the same color.

Last week during meeting of the Council of Ministers, Cuba’s President Miguel Díaz-Canel publicly acknowledged that Cuba is engaged with talk with the US. He explains that these talks seek to “find solution, through dialogue”…”conducted with respect for the political systems and sovereignty of both countries.” Among those in attendance was Raúl Castro’s grandson, Raúl Guillermo Rodríguez Castro. He holds no official title within Cuba’s government but he appears to be playing a role in state affairs.

President Trump has made several public remarks on the condition of Cuba’s affairs, highlighting his interest on the island. “They have no money, they have no anything right now”. He follows by suggesting a “friendly takeover”. All of this unfolds as Cubans on the island continue to bear the brunt of fuel shortages and economic hardship.
