Last week, Cuba’s President Miguel Díaz-Canel sat down with NBC’s Meet the Press — and refused to say he would step down even if his country’s survival depended on it.
Earlier this month, Cuba announced the release of more than 2,000 prisoners. But human rights organizations say not one of them was a political prisoner. At least 775 remain behind bars.
The release comes as Cuba continues to face severe shortages of food, fuel, and electricity — and as analysts suggest Havana may be holding political prisoners as leverage in future negotiations with Washington.
