Martha Washington Chapter, DCDAR

Martha Washington Chapter, DCDAR The Martha Washington Chapter is part of the DC Daughters of the American Revolution. It was formed by Miss Lillian Pike, daughter of General Albert Pike.

Our members are active in the community promoting historic preservation, education, and patriotism. The Martha Washington Chapter was organized February 23, 1893, the third chapter in the District of Columbia. Miss Pike was the Regent of the Chapter for 10 years from 1893 to 1903. In 1912 the Chapter presented to Continental Hall a gift of a bust of Martha Washington made of fine Carrara marble. I

t was sculpted by Lola MacDonald Sleeth. A profile of this bust was used on the 1 1/2 cent stamp issued in 1938. In 1916, the Chapter acquired a deed to a plot of ground surrounding DC Boundary Stone SE6, located at Southern Avenue and Wheeler Road SE. The Chapter agreed to oversee its preservation. During the Second World War, Chapter members volunteered countless hours to assist the war effort, just as thousands of DAR members did across the country. The Martha Washington Chapter was proud to have member Shari Thorne-Sulima serve in the position of D.C.DAR State Regent during 2010-2012. Her teapot of service administration featured a theme of “Serving Our Nation’s Capital; Serving Our Country”, and her project included promoting our unique Boundary Stones, celebrating education and literacy throughout the Nation’s Capital and serving our soldiers. In addition, Mrs. Thorne-Sulima was the first Chapter member to be elected as an NSDAR Vice President General, serving during the 2012-2015 term. The Chapter celebrated its 120th anniversary on February 23, 2013, with a luncheon at the Mount Vernon Inn and a wreath laying at the tomb of the first “First Lady”. On May 2, 2015, the Chapter conducted a rededication of Boundary Stone SE6 following the preservation of the stone and its protective fence as part of a major effort of DDOT and the National Park Service to preserve all of the stones located in D.C. and Maryland. The Martha Washington Chapter looks forward to many more years of service to God, Home and Country.

HONORING OUR VIETNAM VETERANS

It was a pleasure to welcome Shari Thorne-Sulima, DAR Honorary Vice President General, Cynthia Swaine-Strassberg and Rebecca Hough of the DAR Martha Washington Chapter to the Military Women’s Memorial (MWM) for a special presentation to MWM President Phyllis Wilson. In commemoration of National Vietnam War Veterans Day, the DAR Martha Washington Chapter presented four baskets containing bracelets that will be given to Donut Dollies and their families and friends, and all Vietnam servicemembers at the wreath laying ceremony on March 29th at the Vietnam Wall.

The bracelets were made with loving care by the DAR Martha Washington Chapter in honor of and gratitude for the 627 women known as “Donut Dollies” who volunteered in the Vietnam War through the American Red Cross. These women bravely risked their lives visiting our troops in combat zones to boost morale. The bracelets are made with the grommets of flags that had been properly retired. As those grommets withstood time, weather and fire, presenting them to our brave soldiers, veterans, and those who served alongside them is a sign of respect and good luck.

We are grateful to the DAR Martha Washington Chapter for their dedication to our veterans and all who served in and with our Armed Forces. The DAR is an unwavering force in honoring our heroes’ commitment, courage, contributions, and patriotism. Thank you, DAR Martha Washington Chapter, for honoring our Vietnam Veterans and all who served alongside them, this National Vietnam Veterans Day.
