Access Youth provides at-risk students at DC’s most under-resourced schools with the tools they need to stay in school and out of the criminal justice system, and to believe in and work toward a brighter future for themselves and their communities. Access Youth provides disadvantaged young people access to the skills, resources, and support they need to stay in school and out of the juvenile justi

ce system. Our work dramatically improves the attendance, behavior, and academic outcomes for our students, but it also goes a step farther, empowering students to learn and use restorative justice and peer mediation techniques so that they can become student leaders and mediators who can advocate for themselves, their schools, and their communities––now, and in the future.

💣🎉 Attendance pays off!

Access Youth students from Anacostia High School recently earned a trip to BEAT The Bomb through their commitment to showing up and staying engaged. Students who maintained an 85% or higher attendance rate were eligible for this special incentive, with Access Youth participants receiving priority access.

In partnership with the Anacostia HS Counseling Team, 40 students spent the day building teamwork skills, making memories, and celebrating the hard work it takes to show up every day.

At Access Youth, we know that attendance is about more than being present—it's about staying connected to opportunities, supportive relationships, and a brighter future.

👏 Congratulations to all the students who earned their spot!

🧇☀️ Starting the week off right!
Last week, Access Youth partnered with Kramer Middle School to welcome students back after the holiday weekend with a special Breakfast Incentive celebrating on-time attendance.

Students who arrived to school on time enjoyed a delicious breakfast of waffles, fruit, and juice before heading to class ready to learn. In total, we were able to serve approximately 58 students!

Attendance matters—and sometimes a warm breakfast, a friendly welcome, and positive encouragement can make all the difference. We are proud to continue finding creative ways to motivate students, build positive habits, and reinforce the importance of showing up every day.

Thank you to Kramer Middle School for partnering with us to help students start their day feeling valued, energized, and ready for success.

✨ Meet Emily Carr — one of Access Youth's Guiding Stars.

Guiding Stars are our monthly donors — people who make a quiet, powerful commitment to show up for DC's young people every single month. Their steady support means we can keep our eyes on what matters: our students. Not the next fundraiser. Not the next campaign. Our students.

Emily grew up shaped by her piano teachers — people who saw her talent and enthusiasm before she even had words for it. They lit the way. Now she's doing the same.

She carries a line from Maya Angelou that says it all: "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel."

That's exactly what drives her giving — and exactly what Access Youth is built to do.

In Emily's words: "Because of monthly donors like me, we are able to provide community and a safe place at school for DC youth."

And if she could say one thing directly to the students we serve? "Don't forget that you have a whole community supporting you — we believe in you!"

That community is real. Emily is part of it. And because of Guiding Stars like her, our students feel it every day.

Today is Spur Local's Give Greater DC Day!

If you’ve ever wanted to support or share the work Access Youth is doing in DC schools, today is a great day to do it.

Every day, our Program Managers build trusted relationships with students facing chronic absenteeism, conflict, trauma, and instability. We help keep young people engaged in school, increase attendance, reduce suspensions, create a sense of belonging, and build future leaders through restorative justice and long-term support.

Our students deserve consistent adults, safe spaces, and people who believe in their potential.

Check out our Give Greater DC profile today. You can donate or simply share our mission with someone who believes every young person deserves support and opportunity:

Mark your calendars!
Spur Local's second annual Give Greater DC Day is happening next Tuesday, May 12th.

In Washington, DC, far too many students are pushed out of school due to conflict, absenteeism, and lack of support. Access Youth is changing that—keeping students in school, out of the justice system, and on track to graduate through restorative justice and truancy prevention.

On Day, you can be part of that impact.
Support Access Youth and help ensure more young people have the tools, support, and second chances they deserve.

When visionary leaders align, movements happen.

Last week at the home of Founder and Executive Director Jodi Ovca, Access Youth gathered a powerful circle of changemakers — board members, Soirée Host Committee members, Guiding Stars monthly donors, program staff, advocates, and supporters — for an evening of celebration and strategic vision. We were honored to welcome DC Mayor Bowser, a longtime champion of youth development in DC.

In that room sat the architects of change. People who understand that investing in young people isn't just policy or philanthropy — it's the work of building the city we want to see. Over the dinner table, we shared our vision for a future in which all students have access to the same opportunities, resources, and tools to graduate and be prepared for success.

Our students are changing. Our mission is urgent. Our movement is growing.

If you’d like to join this community of changemakers who are shifting life trajectories for DC's at-risk youth, there is room at the table.

One Student at a Time.

J.K. is a senior at Frank W. Ballou High School. In a few short months, she'll walk across a stage and close a chapter of her life that hasn't always been easy.

She'll tell you herself: home has been tough. The family connection she wished for wasn't always there. School came with its own friction — attendance, disagreements, the daily grind of just showing up when showing up is hard.

But J. showed up. And Access Youth showed up for her.

"Being a part of Access Youth is like finding your people — people you have a good time with and can talk about your problems and receive advice in return."

For someone who didn't always have people to turn to at home, that sentence carries the weight of the world.

In one year — just one year — J. has started to see herself differently. Access Youth helped her notice things about herself she never saw before. It opened doors in her mind about her future she didn't know were there. And it gave her a framework she carries every single day:

M.A.D.E. — My Attitude Determines Everything.

"It genuinely helps me realize only I can determine how my days go. Even if I face adversities, I shouldn't let that control my mood."

That's not a slogan. That's armor. And J. built it herself.

When her closest friendship fell apart, Access Youth Program Manager Mr. Jenkins walked into the middle of it — not to take sides, but to help two young women find their way back to each other. That's what Access Youth does. It doesn't just show up for the big crises. It shows up for the everyday heartbreaks too.

J. is almost done with high school. But she is just getting started.

"Access Youth allows students who may not have people to turn to at home find their people — people who can help elevate them and give them a different outlook on life."

J., we see you. We're proud of you. Go show the world what MADE looks like. 🎓✨

One Student at a Time.

A.J. will tell you she's just a homebody who likes naps and her phone. But spend five minutes with her, and you'll see something else entirely — a young woman who has learned to fight her battles with words instead of fists.

A. is in 8th grade at Johnson Middle School. She's been with Access Youth for three years — and in that time, something powerful has happened.

When she arrived, she was navigating real anger. The kind that flares up when the world feels unfair, when conflict finds you before you can find your footing. School was hard. Home had its chaos too — younger sisters, an older brother who "bothers her the most" (her words, with a grin).

But she found something at Access Youth she didn't expect: a space where she could just be.

"I feel more understood… I have a space to release my emotions and get my anger out without being judged."

Her mentor, Access Youth Program Manager Ms. Kyiah, became a morning anchor. A check-in. A voice that followed her through her day even when things got hard.

"When I talk to Ms. Kyiah in the morning, her words stick with me throughout the day."

Three years in, A. doesn't just manage conflict — she understands it. She talks through problems instead of fighting through them. She knows where to go when she's overwhelmed. And she carries something with her every single day that says everything about how far she's come:

"Ya'll remind me that I can be in my soft girl era and be positive."

That right there? That's the whole mission. One conversation, one morning check-in, one student at a time.

We see you, A. We always will. 🌸
