Founded in 1991, Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC works to advance the human and civil rights of Asian Americans, and build and promote a fair and equitable society for all. Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC is one of the nation's leading experts on issues of importance to the Asian American community including: affirmative action, anti-Asian violence prevention/race relations, cens

us, immigrant rights, immigration, language access, television diversity and voting rights. Our expertise is widely acknowledged: in the media, by the public and lawmakers at the very highest tiers of government. Since our founding, along with our affiliates – the Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Atlanta in Atlanta, Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Los Angeles in Los Angeles, the Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Asian Law Caucus in San Francisco, and the Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago in Chicago – we have enacted a sweeping range of programs on critical national issues that enrich, enhance and serve our communities all across the country. To do this, we Promote Civic Engagement by empowering Asian Americans with the tools and support to best participate in the democratic process, while shaping the policies and programs that most affect their communities at the local, regional and national level. We work to Forge Strong and Safe Communities by building community leadership and combating hate crimes, while promoting social understanding between the diverse racial and ethnic groups we represent, as well as their neighboring communities. We are committed to Creating an Inclusive Society by helping Asian American and other minority groups to successfully challenge discriminatory barriers to fair and equal access to justice in the courts, jobs in the marketplace as well as government programs, benefits and forms of assistance at every level.

The new memo from USCIS is about “Adjustment of Status,” which is a process that immigrants inside the U.S. can use to apply for a green card. The memo appears to severely limit when people can use this process. If we take administration officials at face value, this would represent an enormous change, affecting hundreds of thousands of individuals and their families every year.

However, we do not yet know what the full impact of this memo will be. We don’t know how this will affect people with pending applications, and we don’t know how USCIS will implement this moving forward. Consult with a trusted immigration attorney before making any changes to your application or case.

We will share more guidance when we have a better sense of what this change means. While it is understandable to feel confused and scared about these changes, do not panic or rush to take action.

Five years ago today, the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act was signed into law. Progress has been made, but anti-Asian hate remains nearly 2.5x its pre-pandemic levels and federal rollbacks are putting communities at risk.
