The Department of Maine Veterans of Foreign Wars is a non-profit veterans service organization dedicated to those who serve. No one does more for veterans.

The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service: Many arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans' pension for them, and they were left to care for themselves. In their misery, some of these veterans banded together and formed organizations with what would become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. After chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado and Pennsylvania, the movement quickly gained momentum. By 1915, membership grew to 5,000; by 1936, membership was almost 200,000.

The Maine Paws for Veterans program matches qualified dogs with veterans living with service-related PTSD. In this unique program, pairs progress through service dog training together, enriching both lives while building peer relationships.

Yesterday I met with Congresswoman Chellie Pingree and Congressman Jared Golden staff at their DC offices. We disgust HR9237 Take Care of America’s Veterans Act (TCAVA) that the VFW strongly opposes. I express that section 108 of the bill is a hard no for us. We will never accept taking benefits away from one Veteran to pay for another Veteran.
I thanked both of them him for Co-Sponsoring HR2102 Major Richard Star Act. This is the clean version versus the watered down version in TCAVA. I also thanked both of the for signing the House Discharge Petition Pingree #82 and Golden #161. On a side note we hit the magic number of 218 late last night.
Next we talked about his bill HR1845 TAP Promotion Act. This will codify what the VA is already doing by making it a law that VA accredited representatives are allowed on military installations during TAP classes. I thanked him for this bill. I asked both offices to please Co-Sponsor this bill.
Last we talked about HR4837 Written Informed Consent Act. This cost neutral and something the VA states they are already discussing with Veterans. This would make it a law to discuss the drugs and the side effects of them with the Veteran. Then it would be put on paper with the Veterans signing it. Too many time Veterans don’t know what they are taking and how it will affect them. I requested both office to Co-Sponsor this bill.
Both meeting with the staff were good. I have to follow up with both office on a few things.
