Imagine being five years old and already having to question your parents’ judgment.

Jonathan grew up in the 1970s, when his parents’ approach to “age-appropriate” entertainment was… flexible. Very flexible.

What started with one wildly inappropriate trip to the movies became a recurring part of growing up in his family and eventually, a story he’d still be telling decades later.

She left campus for a normal night out. By the time she came back, police were waiting.

During her first semester at Gallaudet University, Kisha went dancing with friends, stayed out until 4 a.m., grabbed pizza, and headed back to her dorm expecting the night to be over.
Instead, police locked students inside the cafeteria and started asking where they had been, what time they had left, and who they were with.

Kisha had no idea yet what had happened on campus while she was gone.

Imagine being 16 and realizing your class schedule might be making Black history.

Ijeoma Njaka started high school with a very specific dream: become a public intellectual, show up in documentaries, say smart things about history, maybe bring a little Tina Fey energy to the whole thing.

Then she learned she was the first Black student to take AP U.S. History at her school in about 20 years, and suddenly being “the smart kid” started to mean something very different.
