Center for American Progress - Sustainable Security Initiative Human Security - Collective Security - National Security Such an approach is good for us and good for others.

Sustainable security redefines how we think about national security in today’s shifting, globalized world. Instead of focusing solely on traditional threats, we also need to spur greater prosperity, encourage effective international development, and work to protect innocent civilians. While we need to maintain a highly capable military, diplomacy and development can often be more cost-effective in

vestments that create new opportunities, prevent crises before military force is required, and better manage our shared challenges. In short, sustainable security is thinking long term about America and its role in the world by focusing on:

- National security: the safety of the United States
- Human security: the well-being and safety of people
- Collective security: the shared interests of the entire world

During the Kosovo war in 1999, Vladimir Putin, who was the Russian national security advisor at the time, backed a dangerous plan that almost led to NATO exchanging fire with Russian troops. Here’s what Putin learned from the incident, and what the West probably should have.

Ending Extreme Poverty in Conflict-Affected Contexts

The World Bank estimates that by 2015, one-half of the world’s poorest people will be living in fragile and conflict-affected states. As the world begins to formulate the post-2015 global development agenda – the successor to the Millennium Development Goals – dealing with the interlinkages between extreme poverty and conflict has become more pressing than ever. President Obama and the United States Agency for International Development have committed themselves to ending extreme poverty in this generation, but the role of peace within the post-2015 agenda remains complex and sometimes controversial.
