For people facing cancer and other serious illnesses, the consequences can be devastating. One Nebraskan, Eli McCreary, lost Medicaid coverage while undergoing treatment for kidney cancer and multiple chronic conditions, causing delays in his care. At the same time, a Medicaid eligibility worker described the rollout as rushed and confusing, citing poor training, inconsistent guidance, and technical challenges.

As ACS CAN's Megan Word warned, the administrative burden on patients remains a major concern.

Stories like Ryder's remind us why Medicaid matters. For many families’ facing cancer, health coverage provides access to treatment, financial stability, and peace of mind during some of the hardest moments of their lives.

As Nebraska moves forward with Medicaid work requirements, we're concerned that eligible individuals could lose coverage because of reporting and paperwork barriers, even when they qualify for assistance. Families battling cancer should be focused on healing, not navigating additional red tape.

Our Nebraska team had a great day advocating for the nearly 12,680 Nebraskans who will be newly diagnosed with cancer this year. Traveling to Washington, DC to meet with congress asking for the highest possible increase to cancer research and prevention funding and the clinical trials modernization act. Sharing our stories isn't always easy, but the potential impact for the thousands of people in our state who are fighting cancer is well worth it!
