As we prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July and the freedoms it represents, our Do More Than Remember campaign has officially closed. Before the holiday begins, I want to take a moment to say thank you.

Because of the generosity of people like you, we raised $11,895 for the Neighborhood Legal Services Program of the District of Columbia’s Veterans Legal Assistance Project. That is $11,895 that will go directly toward the legal work that changes lives: discharge upgrades pursued, benefits recovered, debt eliminated, and evictions prevented.

This was our first Memorial Day campaign. We launched it in May with a simple challenge: do more than remember. You answered it. Whether you gave, shared, or simply took the time to learn more about the veterans NLSP serves, your engagement made a difference, and it did not go unnoticed.

Veterans are only one part of the story. Since 1964, NLSP has provided free civil legal services to low-income DC residents across housing, family law, and economic security. Every day, our attorneys help people facing eviction keep their homes, help families navigate custody and protection orders, help residents access the public benefits they are entitled to, and help clients cut through the legal barriers that poverty makes harder to clear alone. Each year we touch 8,000 residents' lives, most of them from the communities in Wards 5, 7, and 8 that have carried the greatest burden of disinvestment and instability in this city.

True independence means having the stability to thrive. The work continues, and if you would like to stay connected to everything NLSP does to secure justice for our neighbors, we would be glad to have you with us.

Wishing you a safe and happy Fourth of July.

From all of us, thank you.

Memorial Day is twelve days away.

On that day, we will honor the fallen. The ones who gave everything. The ones whose names are carved into stone.

But there is another group of veterans we do not talk about enough on Memorial Day: the ones who came home. The ones who served, survived, and then spent years fighting a different kind of battle, against a system that was supposed to support them and did not.

NLSP's Veterans Legal Assistance Project exists for those veterans. Our attorneys pursue discharge upgrades, recover denied VA benefits, eliminate debt, and prevent evictions. We see the whole person, not just the case.

This Memorial Day, we are asking you to do more than remember. We are asking you to honor the fallen by fighting for the living, and securing someone's future.

Our goal is $25,000 by June 1. Will you make a gift today? https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/donation-form/donate-to-make-a-difference-7875

We mean it when we say every dollar counts. For a small organization, each donation strengthens its ability to meet a community's immediate need, attract and retain staff from the community, and plan for the near future. Supporting these local nonprofits makes a tangible difference in the lives of neighbors whose paths we may cross.

On May 12, our region's second annual Day, explore 100+ small, local nonprofits at GiveGreaterDC.org!
