As we prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July and the freedoms it represents, our Do More Than Remember campaign has officially closed. Before the holiday begins, I want to take a moment to say thank you.
Because of the generosity of people like you, we raised $11,895 for the Neighborhood Legal Services Program of the District of Columbia’s Veterans Legal Assistance Project. That is $11,895 that will go directly toward the legal work that changes lives: discharge upgrades pursued, benefits recovered, debt eliminated, and evictions prevented.
This was our first Memorial Day campaign. We launched it in May with a simple challenge: do more than remember. You answered it. Whether you gave, shared, or simply took the time to learn more about the veterans NLSP serves, your engagement made a difference, and it did not go unnoticed.
Veterans are only one part of the story. Since 1964, NLSP has provided free civil legal services to low-income DC residents across housing, family law, and economic security. Every day, our attorneys help people facing eviction keep their homes, help families navigate custody and protection orders, help residents access the public benefits they are entitled to, and help clients cut through the legal barriers that poverty makes harder to clear alone. Each year we touch 8,000 residents' lives, most of them from the communities in Wards 5, 7, and 8 that have carried the greatest burden of disinvestment and instability in this city.
True independence means having the stability to thrive. The work continues, and if you would like to stay connected to everything NLSP does to secure justice for our neighbors, we would be glad to have you with us.
Wishing you a safe and happy Fourth of July.
From all of us, thank you.
