During National Foster Care Month, the County of San Diego is moving forward with proposed actions to begin “winding down” San Pasqual Academy — a place that has provided stability, mentorship, education, and community for foster youth for more than two decades.

Many stakeholders, former foster youth, alumni, and community members believed this month’s Board update was only supposed to be informational regarding listening sessions and surveys conducted over the last 180 days.

Instead, the County’s Department of Child & Family Well-Being is now proposing actual closure-related actions before broader public input has been fully gathered and assessed.

We are calling for:
✋ A 90-DAY PAUSE on any actions regarding San Pasqual Academy
🗣 Expanded public input sessions
🤝 Greater involvement from former foster youth, alumni, community leaders, and stakeholders before any permanent decisions are made

Tonight, the La Mesa City Council approved a proposal introduced by Public Advocate Shane Harris to establish an honorary “Bill Walton Way” street sign recognizing the life and legacy of NBA Hall of Famer Bill Walton.

The proposal, developed by the Office of the Public Advocate in coordination with the Walton family, marks a significant step in honoring Walton’s enduring impact on La Mesa and the broader San Diego region.

The following is a statement from Public Advocate Shane Harris:

“Tonight is a powerful moment for La Mesa and for everyone who loved and admired Bill Walton. I want to sincerely thank the La Mesa City Council for recognizing the importance of this proposal and for taking action to honor one of the greatest individuals our region has ever known.

When this proposal was first introduced in October 2025, there were no active efforts underway in either the City of San Diego or the City of La Mesa to formally honor Bill Walton in this way. This initiative helped spark that conversation and bring forward a community-driven effort to ensure his legacy is properly recognized. Rather than simply reflecting on what should be done, my office got to work — drafting the proposals, identifying meaningful locations, and formally submitting them to both cities.

Bill Walton represented the very best of this community — generosity, humility, and a lifelong commitment to giving back. I look forward to celebrating this achievement with the Walton family and the community during a special Bill Walton Way signing ceremony, along with a separate unveiling event in the near future.

This is more than a sign — it is a lasting tribute to a life that continues to inspire generations.”

Today Public Advocate Shane Harris proclaimed March as National Developmental Disabilities Month signing it into effect in San Diego, recognizing the importance of inclusion, accessibility, and opportunity for all. I was proud to be joined by dozens of developmentally disabled citizens as I did so.

Across the country, millions of individuals live with developmental disabilities, and 1 in 6 children is impacted. This month reminds us that while awareness matters, action matters even more.

That’s exactly what we saw this past year. Through Unyeway Incorporated, these individuals stepped up and gave back—contributing over 20 hours of service to help make Christmas Day 2025 special for over 500 families who attended the 8th Annual Shane Harris Christmas Day Breakfast. They wrapped over 600 toys in 48 hours in preparation of San Diego’s biggest Christmas Day affair.
