The Office of the San Diego Public Advocate invites Pacific Beach and Mission Beach residents, business owners, workers and community leaders to attend the upcoming Pacific Beach Town Council meeting, where San Diego Public Advocate Shane Harris will deliver a special guest presentation on his proposed boardwalk safety initiative.

Following September’s alarming incident in which a woman was critically injured after a vehicle entered the Pacific Beach boardwalk, Public Advocate Harris called for a 30-day assessment of vulnerable vehicle-access points along the Pacific Beach and Mission Beach boardwalks.

His proposal calls for evaluating practical safety improvements, including retractable bollards and other protective infrastructure, while maintaining essential emergency access.

Now, the conversation comes directly to the community.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY MADE HISTORY. AND THE LEGACY CONTINUES. 🌎🔔

As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, the Office of the San Diego Public Advocate proudly reflects on a historic milestone for our region. ¡Hicimos historia!

On September 30, under the direction and leadership of San Diego Public Advocate Shane Harris Shane Rashad Harris , San Diego County brought together all 21 Hispanic heritage flags in one historic flag-raising ceremony in Chula Vista.

One by one, each flag was raised with the ringing of a ceremonial bell, honoring the unique history, culture and contributions of each heritage before all 21 stood together above Third Avenue.

21 banderas. 21 momentos. Una herencia.

This historic celebration united state, regional and local elected officials, consular representatives, cultural organizations, business leaders and community advocates from across San Diego County and beyond. Diferentes culturas. Diferentes historias. Una comunidad unida.

As a proud Afro-Latino with family roots in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Public Advocate Harris envisioned a celebration where every generation could look up and see its heritage represented. 🇵🇷

Our office extends special gratitude to Chula Vista Mayor John McCann, Vicky Hernandez and Illusion Hall for helping bring this countywide vision to Chula Vista, and to our valued partners Gomez Trial Attorneys and Peterson’s Donut Corner for their support.

Tonight, San Diego Public Advocate Shane Harris responded to President Trump’s remarks invoking San Diego while discussing the war in Iran.

“San Diego is not a symbol to be used in a campaign of fear.”

At a time when families are facing real economic pressure here at home, Harris is calling for truth, transparency and accountability in how our nation makes the case for war.

If the sacrifice is necessary, explain it. If the case is just, make it with the truth. But fear should never be used to manufacture consent.

Read Harris’s full statement below: “At a time when working families across America are struggling to afford groceries, housing and the basic necessities of life, our nation should not be governed by fear. When public support for war begins to weaken, leadership must respond with truth not with images of American cities being destroyed to frighten people into compliance. San Diego is not a symbol to be used in a campaign of fear. It is home to families, workers, veterans, service members and children whose lives carry dignity and worth in America. A government must never ask its people to accept economic suffering at home while using fear to silence legitimate questions about war abroad. If this war is just, make the case with the truth. If it is necessary, explain the sacrifice. But do not manipulate fear to manufacture consent. America is strongest when its people are informed, not frightened; united by truth, not driven by fear.”

STATEMENT FROM SAN DIEGO PUBLIC ADVOCATE SHANE HARRIS 👇

Today’s successful tour of the National City side of Division Street produced an important commitment: National City will move forward with a traffic-engineering speed study through its Engineering and Transportation Department to examine dangerous speeding along this corridor and identify appropriate safety improvements.

I thank Mayor Ron Morrison and Councilmember Luz Molina for joining me in the neighborhood, listening directly to residents and responding to the concerns raised through my Safe Streets Without Borders Initiative. Their commitment demonstrates what can happen when public officials come to the community, witness the conditions firsthand and agree to begin the process of finding solutions.

Now, I am calling on San Diego Councilmember Vivian Moreno and Mayor Todd Gloria to follow National City’s lead.

The City of San Diego must make the same proactive commitment: promptly study the San Diego side of Division Street, evaluate the intersections identified in my proposal and establish the engineering pathway necessary to install stop signs and other traffic-calming improvements where warranted.

Division Street may separate two jurisdictions, but it does not separate the danger. Both cities share this corridor, and both cities share the responsibility for protecting the people who live along it.

We should not wait until a long list of casualties piles up—or until a child, senior or another neighbor is killed—before deciding that action is necessary. Public safety requires both cities to act before tragedy strikes, not simply respond afterward.

National City has now committed to taking an important first step. San Diego should follow suit.

My office will continue working with residents and monitoring the progress on both sides until studies become solutions and promises become safer streets.

On September 30, all 21 Hispanic heritage flags will be raised together in one historic flag-raising ceremony — recognizing the distinct nations, cultures, histories and traditions that make up our Hispanic community. 🇵🇷🇲🇽🇨🇴🇩🇴🇪🇸🌎

For Public Advocate Harris, whose family roots trace to San Juan, Puerto Rico, the message is simple: our heritage deserves to be seen, celebrated and passed forward.
