TORRENTS Presents: Sound Environments
a space for active listening

Sound Mind. Sound Body. Sound Collective

A fundraiser for TORRENTS’ 2026 Fall Forum TORRENTS.FM

Presented in dialogue with OFFLINE: Tracing the Source, an exhibition of new works by artist Hadiya Williams at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center

Sound Environments invites guests into a shared practice of intentional listening. This immersive experience explores the relationship between sound, image, memory, and collective wellbeing. Featuring a live ensemble fusing Jazz, Neo-Soul, and experimental textures, a curated vinyl listening session on a vintage hi-fi system, and a deep selection of classic records and rare publications.

• Vinyl listening session curated by Jamal Gray
• Custom vintage sound system curated by Emil King of
• Live jazz by The Elijah Easton Quartet
• Retro media & ephemera by BeMo
• Vinyl record pop-up by

Where OFFLINE explores the relationship between ancestral memory and contemporary technology through printmaking, ceramics, textile design, and AI-generated collages, Sound Environments extends this inquiry into the sonic realm. Pulling inspiration from the spiritual & avant garde Jazz movements of the 1970s and the Soulquarian music collective of the 90s & 2000s, while honoring the DC area’s storied history of progressive and conscious innovation through the arts.
Framed as “a room for active listening,” the evening investigates what it means to cultivate a sound mind and sound body within a collective context. In a cultural landscape increasingly mediated by code and distraction, this gathering proposes listening as an embodied and communal act.

Since 1998, CulturalDC has brokered over 300,000 square feet for artists and arts organizations, launched Flashpoint, hosted the Source Festival, brought the Mobile Art Gallery to all eight wards and welcomed nearly 200,000 visitors, and championed underrepresented artists through the Capital Artist Residency and Torrents.

Wow! That’s a quarter-century of showing up for art and artists in DC!

Amid a changing funding landscape and the headwinds many arts organizations face at this vital moment, CulturalDC’s Board of Directors made the tough decision to sunset operations, effective September 30, 2025. In that spirit, we are making legacy gifts that keep making space for art through our community:

• $500,000 endowment with Howard University’s Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts to continue the Capital Artist Residency and launch a Visiting Artist fund

• $150,000 to Hamiltonian Artists to support housing and exhibition resources in partnership with Howard University

• $250,000 to Theater Alliance to help build a new multidisciplinary venue in Southwest

• $100,000 and the donation of our Mobile Art Gallery to The Nicholson Project

• Grants to partners including Black Public Media, JCINTIME Creatives Foundation, The Bearded Ladies Cabaret, In Series, Capital Fringe – The Tyler Fund, Extreme Lengths Productions, Sarah Ewing Dance, and more

• Torrents: New Links to Black Futures returned to Creative Director Jamal Gray, with financial support for 2026 programming

There’s no easy way to capture 27 years, but the work continues through these investments—and through you!

With deep gratitude: to the artists; our employees past and present; community partners; BIDs; city agencies; stakeholders; donors; board members; and everyone who has made this work possible. We would never have been able to do this without you. Thank you for helping us Make Space for Art in DC and beyond!

At CulturalDC, we believe in creating space—bold, unapologetic, beautiful space—for everyone in our communities to be seen, celebrated, and cared for. 🌈

That’s exactly what we’re doing with MIGHTY MIGHTY: The Barbershop Project by , now on view in our Mobile Art Gallery outside MLK Library.
This installation transforms the barbershop—often a space of complex identity politics—into a glittering sanctuary of q***r Black joy, radical care, and transformation. It’s a powerful reminder that Pride is protest, presence, and pride all at once.

Come through. Be seen. Be fab!

Just last week, our Mobile Art Gallery opened its doors for MIGHTY MIGHTY: The Barbershop Project by artist .

Presented in partnership with , this immersive installation reimagines the barbershop as a space for transformation, healing, and radical self-expression—especially for Black and LGBTQ+ communities.

Originally launched in 2019, the project returns with renewed urgency for World Pride 2025, offering a powerful reflection on beauty, identity, and care.

We’ve already welcomed so many through the gallery, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Now more than ever, this work reminds us how vital it is to create spaces where community, culture, and creativity converge.

Stay tuned for more information about our free haircut activations, taking place on select dates and times outside of regular exhibition hours.

A heartfelt thank you to our sponsors, partners, barbers, and host committee for making this all possible!
