BDPA Washington (BDPA-DC)

BDPA Washington (BDPA-DC) BDPA-DC was founded and chartered by National BDPA in 1978.

BDPA-DC promotes expansion of technology with community STEM programs, corporate outreach, and service delivery to underserved and unserved communities within the National Capital Region (NCR). Toward this end, our chapter encourages support of Chapter Interest Groups (CIGs) which are designed to meet or exceed service delivery requirements where growing technical trends and demographics ultimatel

y can support a sustainable, viable and vibrant BDPA Corporate Advisory Council (CAC), Corporate Technology Council (CTC), and a Corporate Legislative Council (CLC) to effectively work with standing Chapter Committees and assigning SMEs and mentors to Integrated CS-STEM Project Team (ICPT) leaders.

HAPPY EXASCALE DAY!

It's 10.18. Exascale Day is celebrated on October 18th honoring researchers and scientists who use supercomputers to advance discoveries in weather forecasts, medicine, energy, cybersecurity, Ai, and materials science. For tech industries and BDPA Members, this day also celebrates the impact of high-performance computing (HPC).

Exascale computing is supercomputing at one quintillion calculations, or 10 to the 18th power (10^18), per second. An exabyte is one quintillion bytes. Our exascale era of high-performance computing began in May 2022 with the launch of Frontier, the world's first exascale computer built by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE).

Back in the day early home computers, such as an ATARI 400, had 8 kilobytes (8 KB) of memory.

• Kilobyte: 1,000 bytes
• Megabyte: 1,000,000 bytes
• Petabyte: 1,000 terabytes
• Exabyte: 1,000 petabytes
• Zettabyte: One trillion gigabytes

TBT | Throwback Thursday

On this day, 16 October 1995, a professional and peaceful gathering of community leaders met in Washington, D.C. for the "Million Man March."

National BDPA's Washington, D.C. Chapter (BDPA-DC) served as the Association's Host Chapter.

• 1990's featured second-generation (2G) digital technology
• In 1995, Prodigy, Compuserve, and America Online (AOL) began to offer Internet access
• In 1995, the MQ-1 Predator drone was introduced and put into action by the U.S. Air Force and the Central Intelligence Agency
• In 1995, Toy Story became the first feature film created using only computer-generated imagery
• In 1995, our first version of PHP, a scripting language, was released; Linux 95, was released; and Windows 95 was released with the first version of their Internet Explorer (IE) browser.

BDPA maintained connectivity with local BDPA Chapters and other organizations using Bulletin Board System (BBS) networks. According to FidoNet, BBSes reached their peak usage around 1996, which was the same period that the World Wide Web (WWW) and AOL became mainstream. BBSes rapidly declined in popularity thereafter, and were replaced by systems using the Internet for connectivity.

Less than a year after the Million Man March, BDPA registered its new Internet domain name "bdpa.org" on 17 February 1996.
