A crucial day in the skies over Britain, it was one of the largest aerial engagements of WW II up to that point. The Luftwaffe sought to achieve air superiority ahead of a planned ground invasion. However, in spite of heavy losses, British forces prevailed, shooting down more German aircraft than they lost, demonstrating their resilience and tactical effectiveness. It underscored the importance of Air Power and marked a turning point in the Battle of Britain.

Today, August 14th, we observe National Navajo Code Talkers Day, acknowledging the extraordinary contributions of Native-American Marines. They developed and used an unbreakable code based on their Dinรฉ language, a pivotal advantage in our victories over the Japanese in the Battle of Iwo Jima and other island strongholds.

Purple Heart Day commemorates the creation of our Nationโ€™s oldest decoration for military merit. It was created by Gen. George Washington in 1787 to be presented to soldiers for "๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘ฆ ๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘›๐‘”๐‘ข๐‘™๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘™๐‘ฆ ๐‘š๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘  ๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘›" and symbolized the courage and devotion of an American Patriot.

In the 1930's, around the time of Washingtonโ€™s 200th birthday, Gen. Douglas MacArthur persuaded the U.S. War Department to create the Order of the Purple Heart. Jewish War Veterans celebrate the Chaplain Corp, formed on this date in 1775, reportedly based on General Washingtonโ€™s โ€œ๐‘Š๐‘’ ๐‘›๐‘’๐‘’๐‘‘ ๐‘โ„Ž๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘™๐‘Ž๐‘–๐‘›๐‘ โ€ comment to staff. The Corps came together just six weeks after the Continental Army itself, and a year before there was a United States.

First limited to clergy โ€œ๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘‘๐‘Ž๐‘–๐‘›๐‘’๐‘‘ ๐‘๐‘ฆ ๐‘Ž ๐ถโ„Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘ ๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘Ž๐‘› ๐‘‘๐‘’๐‘›๐‘œ๐‘š๐‘–๐‘›๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘›,โ€ later opened to other faiths during the civil War with President Lincolnโ€™s appointment of Rabbi Jacob Frankel in 1862.

Today, some 3,000 chaplains representing a wide range of beliefs offer spiritual and emotional support to service members and their families across all the military branches.

The first war of the Cold War-era erupted on June 25, 1950 as North Korean forces crossed into South Korea. The war would last three years, involving troops from around the globe, and costing millions of lives.

Korean War Veterans Armistice Day commemorates the end of hostilities on July 27, 1953, remembers the ceasefire that created the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), and recognizes those who served during this oft forgotten war.

In 1992, President George H. W. Bush and Korean War veteran Marine General Raymond Davis broke ground on the Korean War Memorial in Washington D.C. Three years later, President Bill Clinton proclaimed National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day and, along with South Korean President Kim Young-sam, dedicated the memorial to all the Korean Veterans.
