In Remembrance of Beirut

in 1983, a terrorist bombing at the Marine Barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, claimed the lives of 241 U.S. service members, including 220 Marines, serving as part of the Multinational Force in Lebanon.

On October 23, a su***de bomber drove a truck laden with explosives into the barracks where U.S. Marines were stationed on a peacekeeping mission. The attack devastated the building and became one of the deadliest days in Marine Corps History.

The Marines in Beirut were deployed to help restore peace and stability amid escalating violence in Lebanon. Despite the dangers they faced, they carried out their mission with courage, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to one another.

The Beirut bombing left a lasting mark on the and the nation. We remember the lost lives, honor the wounded and survivors, and recognize the families and loved ones who continue to carry the weight of that day. Their sacrifice remains woven into the legacy of every who has answered the call to serve.

Today, we pause to remember the 241 American service members who never made it home and honor their courage, sacrifice, and devotion to duty.

They came in peace. They will never be forgotten.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, a time to promote inclusive workplaces and recognize the contributions of workers with disabilities.

For many veterans, service-related disabilities create a unique challenge when transitioning to civilian employment. Access to meaningful work, inclusive hiring practices, and the chance to build a fulfilling career are key to supporting veterans beyond their military service.

Jewish War Veterans of the USA (JWV) encourages meaningful efforts to ensure every veteran has the opportunity to thrive.

Happy 251st Birthday to the United States Navy!

Jewish War Veterans of the USA proudly honors the generations of sailors who have served our nation with courage, dedication, and sacrifice. These traditions of service continue today, as seen in the sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln returning to their home port of San Diego following a 10-month deployment.

We honor all who have worn the Navy uniform and thank them for their service to our nation.

Today we recognize Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoplesโ€™ Day, observed on the same day in many communities, as we reflect on the diverse histories and experiences that have shaped our nation.

We commemorate the arrival of Columbus to the Americas in 1492, while also honoring the rich cultures, traditions and contributions of the indigenous peoples of this great land. As veterans, we salute the many native Americans who have, and continue to serve with honor and pride in the U.S. military in defense of our nation.

Today's Federal Holiday is an opportunity to listen and learn about our shared American history.

On General Pulaski Memorial Day, we remember Jewish patriots like Benjamin Nones, a Jewish immigrant from Bordeaux, France who fought alongside General Casimir Pulaski during the Siege of Savannah in 1778. Nones and fellow Jewish patriots Jacob de Leon, Emanuel de la Motta and Jacob de La Motta remind us of the important role Jewish Americans played in the Revolutionary War that gained our independence from Great Britain.

Today, we honor their courage, service and commitment to the ideals of a new nation.

Moadim L'Simcha and Chag Sameach!

Today marks Hoshana Rabbah, the culmination of Sukkot, as we head into Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah โ€” days of reflection, celebration, and renewal.

Simchat Torah is often called the most joyful day on the Jewish calendar. We finish reading the final words of Deuteronomy, and roll the scroll back to the beginning to start Genesis. It is a celebration of endurance, renewal, and carrying our story forward.

Throughout American history, that sense of continuity has traveled with Jewish service members wherever duty has called. During World War II, Korea, Vietnam, and in desert hangars across the Middle East, military chaplains carried compact, field-issue Torah scrolls packed into olive-drab kit bags. Troops gathered in tents, on ship decks, or on airstrips to dance their hakafot โ€” holding that small scroll close, far from home, but rooted in thousands of years of tradition.

They proved what every generation of Jewish veterans know: we carry our traditions wherever duty calls us.

As we conclude the festival of Sukkot and celebrate Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah, we honor that enduring tradition and the generations of Jewish Americans who have carried it forward. May our community find strength in our shared heritage and real joy in the cycle ahead.

โ€“ JWV Supports H.R. 4837 as a More Comprehensive Approach

โ€œJWV commends the Department of Veterans Affairs for listening to JWV and for implementing the expansion of informed consent through administrative action. Veterans, their families, and caregivers will be better informed about the benefits, side effects, risks, and treatment alternatives. With this enhanced knowledge, adverse reactions and consequences will be avoided,โ€ stated NC Selina Kanowitz, MSgt. USAFR (Ret.). Kanowitz continued, โ€œVAโ€™s action is only a first step toward expanding informed consent beginning in 2027. JWV supports H.R. 4837, the Written Informed Consent Act, as a more comprehensive approach to improving the policy.โ€

JWV will monitor VA efforts to communicate these new procedures to veterans and to ensure staff training. JWV is proud to stand with more than 28 other veterans service organizations that joined us in supporting these critical changes to VAโ€™s informed consent policy.

JWVโ€™s Long-Standing Support on Informed Consent

For more than two years, JWV has supported H.R. 4837 and urged Congress and the VA to improve and expand informed consent for veterans prescribed certain medications. JWV highlighted the importance of informed consent for veterans during NC Stevensโ€™ meeting with Secretary Collins, in its two most recent Congressional Joint Hearing Testimonies, and at VSOsโ€™ roundtables with VA and congressional staff.
