Moonshot Missions recently had the opportunity to visit Gary Sanitary District (GSD). GSD and Moonshot staff toured the facility and discussed opportunities for partnership by highlighting Utility Performance Management (UPM).

UPM is a forward-thinking approach to utility management that focuses on four key components: business cases for projects, quick-win opportunities, proactive asset management, and innovative funding. GSD has already been implementing and exploring innovative utility improvements across their operations.

We’re excited to work with GSD as they continue building on the impressive progress they’ve already made in transforming their utility. By continuing to incorporate UPM principles into daily operations and long-term planning, GSD is taking another step toward becoming an even more resilient, efficient, and sustainable utility. Moonshot Missions is grateful for the chance to work together on these goals!

More great work and representation on the Great Lakes team! Rania Bashar, Senior Program Manager, presented at the Indiana Water Environment Association Conference in August. Bashar’s presentation, “Improving Utility Operations and Maintenance through Technical Assistance,” provided participants the opportunity to explore TA opportunities in the Great Lakes region through practical, cost-effective strategies.

Over the course of the presentation, Rania was able to:
💧 Introduce Moonshot as a TA provider and share the team’s credentials, reach, and goals
💧 Highlight case studies from the Great Lakes watershed to demonstrate how utilities improve performance, access funding, achieve compliance, and implement innovative solutions
💧 Offer practical, actionable insights on how free technical assistance can support Indiana wastewater utilities

Moonshot Missions recently had the opportunity to visit the MultiLake Water & Sewer Authority Wastewater Treatment Plant (MLWSA) in Dexter, Michigan. With about 1500 residential customers across four municipalities, MLWSA initially queried Moonshot Missions around long-term sustainability options for their treatment plant. Moonshot staff were then able to tour the facility and talk through long-term sustainability options for the utility, as well as options for operational optimization.

Moonshot found a highly engaged staff and utility commission, and a well-operated and maintained facility. We’re excited to work with MLWSA as they continue to adopt strategies and work plans that align with Utility Performance Management, including preventative maintenance and the consolidation of resources. We’d also like to thank the Great Lakes Protection Fund for making this work possible!

Moonshot Missions is hosting a Water Leaders’ Roundtable before WEFTEC this year!

We have carefully sought the leadership and advice of many utility leaders during the rollout of our Utility Performance Management method, a structured, data-informed approach that helps utilities align budgeting, operations, staffing, and capital planning to achieve cleaner water at lower long-term cost.

In order to further these conversations, we’ll be hosting a Saturday session titled “Building a Utility Performance Management Playbook: A Water Leaders' Roundtable.” This session will be focused on updates on our work to date, an opportunity to hear from and engage with our Partner Network, and a discussion of next steps for this exciting initiative.

Good news! Moonshot Missions is excited to announce the launch of a new online, interactive course designed for wastewater operators and other water professionals that features:
💧 Practical guidance and real-world examples for troubleshooting and optimization of phosphorus removal performance
💧 Engaging, short video content on phosphorus removal, and interactive checkpoints to reinforce key concepts

The course has also been pre-approved for 2.0 CEUs in Wisconsin for operators, with additional applications out in other states. The content is adapted from our published module on the topic here:

The Town of Bowling Green's water and sewer systems serve fewer than 1,600 people. With a modest revenue base, aging infrastructure, and regulatory obligations, the utility faced significant financial and operational challenges—including high costs to haul wastewater sludge out of town.

Moonshot Missions helped identify a sludge dewatering project estimated to save more than $250,000 a year in operating expenses and supported the Town’s funding application. The result was a $680,000 Clean Water State Revolving Fund award, including $646,000 in principal forgiveness.

Along with additional support, this work has given Bowling Green a clearer financial roadmap and a path back into compliance. Moonshot is also delivering the utility’s first rate study in two decades to help modernize its rate structure and support long-term planning 🌎💧
