Association of Farmworker Opportunity Programs AFOP empowers America's farmworkers through career training, education, and health and safety programs.

By breaking the cycle of poverty, we safeguard America's food system and build stronger, more resilient communities. Most farmworkers earn less than $10,000 per year from what is often backbreaking and dangerous labor. AFOP and its member organizations serve farmworkers in 49 states and Puerto Rico. We provide job training, pesticide and health safety education, emergency assistance, and an advocacy voice for the people who prepare and harvest our food. Many member organizations operate a variety of programs in addition to the U.S. Department of Laborโ€™s National Farmworker Jobs Program (NFJP), including Head Start, education, and housing counseling. The Association also operates train the trainer pesticide safety programs for farmworkers. Funded by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, AFOP trains outreach workers in member agencies and related organizations in the Worker Protection Standard and in the latest techniques and materials. The trainers at the local level then conduct trainings for groups of farmworkers to help them understand and protect themselves for the dangers of pesticides. Hundreds of thousands of family members, children, and community agencies have also received training on pesticide safety. AFOP advocates for policies that benefit and protect agricultural workers. Through its newsletter, the Association communicates the latest facts and trends in the world of farmworker services and advocacy. Called the Washington Newsline, this publication is a valuable tool for farmworker organizations, AFOP member agencies, and policymakers. The Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that supports its national staff, offices, and programs primarily from grants, membership fees, and contributions.

Day 5 National Farm Safety & Health Week focuses on Skin Cancer

Farmworkers spend long hours outdoors, increasing their exposure to harmful UV rays. Wearing protective clothing and a wide-brimmed hat, seeking shade when possible, and regularly applying sunscreen can help reduce the risk.

Protect your skin today so you can keep workingโ€”and thrivingโ€”tomorrow.

Day 4 of National Farm Safety & Health Week focuses on Confined Spaces:
Grain bins, silos, tanks, manure pits, and other confined spaces can expose agricultural workers to serious hazardsโ€”including toxic gases, low oxygen, engulfment, and entrapment.

Before entering a confined space:
โœ… Identify the hazards
โœ… Test the atmosphere when required
โœ… Follow proper entry procedures
โœ… Use appropriate PPE and safety equipment
โœ… Never enter aloneโ€”make sure a rescue plan is in place
No task is worth risking a life. Know the hazards before you enter.

๐ŸŒฑ The next generation learns safety from the conversations we have today.

For Day 3 of National Farm Safety & Health Week, letโ€™s make time to listen to young people, talk openly about risks, and build trust across generations. Those conversations can help prevent injuries on farms and ranches.
