"On a busy tourist strip in Orlando, behind noisy bars and souvenir shops, 21 sloths in crates reached the end of a grueling international trip. The tree-dwelling mammals were transferred to a warehouse resembling an old oil-change garage and placed in cages. The warehouse is the off-site facility of a new roadside attraction called “Sloth World,” a $49 animal encounter marketed as a conservation-focused center scheduled to open soon. Nothing could have prepared the sloths for this. Until recently, they lived wild in the forest canopies of Guyana. "

The animals, highly susceptible to illness when removed from their habitat, have been kept in a warehouse. More than 31 have died.

Register for this exciting upcoming talk!

On Thursday September 25, 12 pm ET/9am PT. The 2022 CAF grantee Dr. Shaina Sadai will discuss "Sea Level Rise and Multispecies Climate Justice."

Talk Description: Climate change is causing sea levels to rise at an accelerating rate, impacting shorelines around the world. The long-term impacts will occur over generations and will be highly spatially variable along coastlines. Sea level rise impacts and adaptation responses vary geographically and affect all who dwell in or move through coastal spaces. The emerging lens of multispecies climate justice allows us to look deeper into the interrelated ecologies of climate impacts by considering a broad assessment of interrelated beings and ecosystems. This talk will discuss research on the global impacts of sea level rise on nonhuman animals, and implications for advancing multispecies climate justice. This work is part of a forthcoming book on Multispecies Climate Justice being coedited by Drs. Sadai, Cifuentes, and Rutherford. Speaker: Dr. Shaina Sadai, Five College Associate Dr. Shaina Sadai (she/her) is a climate scientist and critical physical geographer. Her research focuses on projecting future global changes in climate and sea level; attributing climate impacts to corporate high emitters; and understanding climate justice, particularly through critical geographies of sea level rise and multispecies climate justice frameworks.

"In The Dying Trade, a forthcoming documentary film about slaughterhouse workers, a man named Tom describes a moment during his career that still haunts him many years later: the time he skinned a cow alive while she was giving birth.

Tom worked at slaughterhouses across Europe from the late 1990s to the mid-2010s, and one of his jobs on the production line was to remove the skin from animals after they had been hung up, stunned unconscious, and bled out. That’s how it’s supposed to work in theory."

What slaughtering animals all day does to your mind.

Must Read new book by professor John Sanbonmatsu
"Offers the most powerful case yet for ending our exploitation of animals for food. Millions of Americans see themselves as "conflicted omnivores," worrying about the ethical and environmental implications of their choice to eat animals. Yet their attempts to justify their choices only obscure the truth of the matter: in John Sanbonmatsu’s view, killing and eating animals is unethical, regardless of whether they are "free range" or factory farmed. Shattering the conventional wisdom around the meat economy, he reframes the question of animal agriculture from one of "sustainability" to one of existential and moral purpose, presenting a powerful case for the total abolition of the animal economy. In a rejoinder to Michael Pollan and other critics who have told us that we can have our meat and our consciences, too, he shows why "humane meat" is always a contradiction in terms.

The Omnivore’s Deception provides a deeply observed philosophical meditation on the nature of our relationship with animals. Peeling back the myriad layers of myth, falsehoods, and bad faith that keep us eating meat, the book offers a novel perspective on our troubled relations with animals in the food economy. The problem with raising and killing animals for food isn't just that it's "bad for the environment,” but the wrong way to live a human life.

A tour de force of moral philosophy and cultural critique, The Omnivore's Deception will change the way we think about meat, animals, and human purpose."
