這次四十周年年會的研討會,特別邀請前駐美代表沈呂巡博士,專程返美為研討會主講開幕,期待沈博士帶來最新的專家分析的朋友,千萬不能錯過。除了主講後,研討會規劃了兩場主題分組座談,第一場為「兩岸關係」主題,邀請到來自台灣政治大學外交所,精研兩岸關係議題的鄧中堅教授、CNAS(美國安全亞太中心)的資深顧問Mr. Patrick M. Cronin、馬里蘭大學政府政治系,長期觀察研究兩岸關係演變的Scott Kastner教授、以及全球台灣研究中心的執行長Russell Hsiao等四位專家學者與會,將為目前的兩岸關係發展及未來演變帶來精彩的討論分析。

第二場座談則於3:45繼續就台美的經貿關係互動,展開探討台灣在美國退出TPP後,又將採取哪些策略繼續與美國保持良好經貿互動,尤其在川普新政權後,美中的經貿政策,又將會帶給台灣甚麼影響等,也邀請到知名的政治經濟學者王維正教授(目前任Ithaca College人文科學系主任暨政治學教授) 、CSIS(國際策略研究中心)負責華人企業暨政治經濟專案的Scott Kennedy主任,以及傳統基金會的研究員Riley Walters共同從經貿角度來探討台美中關係的互動及演變。兩場座談都將開放充裕時間供現場參與者與主講人提問互動討論

美國國務院前副發言人、智庫「史汀生中心」東亞計畫主任容安瀾表示,兩岸關係的重要問題並非「一中」,而是台灣的獨立;他說,台灣總統蔡英文可以表明獨立不在議程,也可以在適當情況下凍結台獨黨綱,這可能是北京可接受的方式,前提是在蔡英文的政治地位允許情況下,但目前情況並非如此。
