Girls Gotta Run is proud to support the United Nations' International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent.

20 years ago, we developed our mission to support girls and young women in Ethiopia. By tying our programming to running, we offered a chance for participants to engage with an activity that not only kept them physically fit, but would help them grow in confidence and power. Over the years, that programming transformed to include educational resources, skills development, mentorship, and more.

We have made so many strides, but there is still work to be done to ensure women in Ethiopia—and all women of African descent across the world—are seen, and that their voices are uplifted.

This , we take the time to honor Nelson Mandela's commitment to sport as a vehicle for social change. Just like all of us at Girls Gotta Run, he believed that "sport has the power to change the world," because it can inspire, unite, engage youth across language and geographic barriers, and create hope.

We carry these beliefs every day as we continue to use running as a platform for girls and mothers to build confidence, continue their education, and create lives of agency and independence.

🏆 MAKE WAY! Champs coming through! 🏆

Last week, Girls Gotta Run was awarded the Team Championship Cup at the 2026 Oromia Regional Championships in Nekemte! One of the year’s most competitive track and field events, the Championships garner athletes from all over the Oromia Region. With just 11 competitors, GGRF came home with 5 medals, putting forth performances that showed their resilience and hard work. 🏅

GGRF medal winners include:
⭐️ Martha Alemayehu, who won gold in the 400m and bronze in the relay
⭐️ Dibble Hark, who won gold in the 800m
⭐️ Jitu Lama, who won bronze in the 1,000m
⭐️ Init Harp, who won bronze in the 800m
⭐️ Fatiya Abum, who won gold bronze in the relay.

We are so proud of these runners for getting out on the track, showing their skills, and making their names amongst the region’s best talent. Congratulations!

At Girls Gotta Run, we know that economic empowerment can be transformative, especially for the mothers we serve. Owning a business, serving an existing need, and becoming financially independent all help to break cycles of poverty, shift gender norms, and build thriving communities for their children.

Moved by this belief, Hatch Africa founder Joseph Shields and EthioChicken recently stepped forward to help launch a poultry entrepreneurship initiative within GGRF’s Mothers’ Savings and Entrepreneurship Program. Just a few months later, the results exceed expectations.

As an official charity partner of the Sydney Marathon, we have several bids available for runners eager to grab a spot in the 7th—and newest—World Major.

Last week, 22 Girls Gotta Run Athletic Scholars traveled to Addis Ababa to compete in the Women’s First 5K 💫

Our largest group ever—and a powerful moment of visibility, confidence, and community. For the first time, girls from Soddo and Bekoji came together, building connection and sisterhood across programs.

For many, it was their first time traveling beyond their hometown. Their first time racing in a major city. Their first time seeing what’s possible beyond the boundaries placed around them.

This is why we run. 🏃🏽‍♀️✨

Every scholar in GGRF’s program receives a full sports kit: Running shoes. Shirt. Shorts. Socks. And yes, a properly fitted sports bra! Because without the right support, running can be painful and discouraging. With it, girls can move freely, fully, and confidently.
