A Century of Civic Engagement: Milestones in Women’s Suffrage History in the U.S.

Here is a brief look at key milestones in American history:

• 1848 – Seneca Falls Convention: Leaders and citizens gather in New York for the first national convention advocating for women's voting rights and expanded legal protections.
• 1869 – Western Leadership: The Wyoming Territory passes landmark legislation granting women full voting rights, setting a precedent that several states would follow over the coming decades.
• 1878 – Congressional Introduction: A federal constitutional amendment proposing women's voting rights is formally introduced in the U.S. Congress.
• 1916 – Historic Representation: Jeannette Rankin of Montana is elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming the first woman to serve in Congress.
• 1920 – The 19th Amendment: Following nationwide advocacy and vital civic contributions during World War I, the 19th Amendment is officially ratified, granting American women the constitutional right to vote.
