In Memoriam: Professor Emeritus Locksley Edmondson

The Cornell Black Alumni Association mourns the passing of Professor Emeritus Locksley Edmondson of Cornell’s Africana Studies and Research Center.

Born in Jamaica, Professor Edmondson taught across the diaspora he studied before joining the Africana Center in 1983, later serving as its Director from 1991 to 1996. His scholarship insisted on a truth many of us carry into our own work: that the Caribbean, the African continent, and Black America are not separate stories but one story, told in different accents.

I had the honor of sitting in his classroom as an undergraduate, and like generations of Cornellians, I left it with a wider view of the world and of my place in it.

Our deepest condolences to his family, his loved ones, and all who were blessed to be under his tutelage. He is with the ancestors now.

In Memoriam: Africana Professor Locksley Edmondson

Dear CBAA Family,

It is with a heavy heart that I write to share news of the passing of Professor Emeritus Locksley Edmondson of Cornell University’s Africana Studies and Research Center.

Professor Edmondson was a titan of Africana scholarship. Born in Jamaica, WI, he taught across the diaspora he studied, from Makerere University in Uganda to the University of the West Indies, before returning to Cornell. He first taught on the Hill in the early 1970s, joined the Africana Studies and Research Center in 1983, and served as Director of the Center from 1991 to 1996.

His work in international relations and race relations helped give intellectual structure to Pan-Africanism as a field of serious study, and it insisted on a truth that many of us carry into our own work: that the Caribbean, the African continent, and Black America are not separate stories but one story, told in different accents.

I write this not only as President of the Cornell Black Alumni Association but as one of his former students. I had the honor of learning from Professor Edmondson during my undergraduate years, and like so many of you, I left his classroom with a wider view of the world and of my place in it. Generations of Cornellians can say the same. That is the mark of a great teacher, and it is a legacy no loss can take from us.

This is a profound loss for our community, for Cornell, and for the academic world at large. On behalf of the entire CBAA Executive Board and membership, we extend our deepest condolences to his wife, Elizabeth Edmonson, his family, his loved ones, his colleagues at the Africana Center, and to everyone blessed to have been under his tutelage.

Yohance Fuller (Washington D.C., MBA ‘05) is the founder and CEO of Adinkra Solutions, Inc., a real estate advisory and asset management firm.

His degree concentrated in real estate development and finance. While on campus, Yohance served as President of the Black Graduate Business Association. He arrived in Ithaca as a Brooklyn-raised son of Jamaican immigrants and left with a clear thesis for the work he wanted to do and the people he wanted to do it for.

Of all he’s accomplished thus far, Yohance values home the most. He and his wife are the parents of two incredible children. Their son Kingston who graduated from Benjamin Banneker Academic High School as valedictorian and is entering Morehouse College this fall and their daughter Taj is currently an honors student at Banneker.

Dr. Michele Holding (Pennsylvania, BA ‘85), is Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. She owns and operates the Back Pain Center, P.C. in Pottstown, just outside of Philadelphia!

Dr. Holding is also an outstanding alumni member who has gone above and beyond as a current leader on the CBAA Fundraising Committee. Her enthusiasm was on full display throughout our 50th Anniversary Celebration kickoff in April!

She credits her success to the foundational principles she acquired during her undergraduate years at Cornell.

Cornell taught her “how to learn.”

Her Big Sisters at Wari House taught her how to cook.
Her time as President of Black Students United helped her hone her leadership skills.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated taught her loyalty, service, and gave her the gift of long lasting friendships.

Dean Janice Turner taught her the importance of commitment, action, mentorship, and “giving back.”
