Congratulations to Indian River Central School District for earning an Award of Merit in the National School Public Relations Association's 2026 Publication and Digital Media Excellence Awards for its Federal Impact Aid Video!

Developed in partnership with CiTi BOCES Public Relations Department, the video puts student voices front and center to show how Impact Aid supports classroom resources and daily school operations, while also encouraging families to complete their student survey forms.

Applications are now open for the 2026 John Forkenbrock Education Innovation Grants!

NAFIS-member school districts can apply for up to $5,000 to support innovative projects that address the academic needs and social-emotional wellness of federally impacted PreK–12 students.
Formerly known as the Good Idea Grants, these grants help educators turn promising ideas into reality when district funding isn’t available. Past projects have included robotics and literacy programs, outdoor classrooms, and student-operated businesses.

The grants are administered by the Federally Impacted Schools Educational Foundation (FISEF), the NAFIS foundation. In 2026, the grants were renamed in honor of John Forkenbrock, who led NAFIS for 27 years and dedicated his career to advancing educational opportunities for federally connected students.

Applications are due December 15, 2026.

Today is Impact Aid Day!

On September 30, 1950, President Harry S. Truman signed Impact Aid into law, acknowledging the federal responsibility to school districts impacted by federal property.

Because federally owned land is tax-exempt, Impact Aid reimburses school districts for lost local revenue, giving local leaders the flexible funding they need to support students, pay teachers, and maintain facilities. For 76 years, Impact Aid has helped ensure students in communities impacted by military installations, Tribal lands, national parks, and other federal property have access to a high-quality education.

Today, Impact Aid supports nearly 8 million students across approximately 1,100 school districts in 48 states, D.C., and Puerto Rico. Yet despite its essential role, the program has not been fully funded since 1969.

Earlier this week, NAFIS members and advocates took to Capitol Hill, meeting with members of Congress and their staff to raise awareness of the importance of Impact Aid.

The weather may have been rainy, but it didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of our advocates. Members shared their local experiences and made the case for strong, reliable Impact Aid funding for the federally connected students and school districts who depend on it.

Thank you to all of the NAFIS members and advocates who took the time to participate, share their stories, and speak up for their schools and communities. Your voices make a difference in keeping Impact Aid a priority on Capitol Hill.

The NAFIS staff has been hard at work getting ready for the 2026 NAFIS Fall Conference, which kicks off this Sunday!

We’re excited to welcome so many members of the NAFIS Family to Washington, D.C., for an event filled with connection, conversation, and plenty of opportunities to learn and share - as well as time on Capitol Hill in support of Impact Aid.

Impact Aid 7007(b) Discretionary Construction Grant applications are now open!

The U.S. Department of Education has announced $19 million in FY 2026 funding for Impact Aid 7007(b) grants, with a focus on emergency repair projects that address immediate health and safety hazards for students and school personnel.

Eligible school districts may apply for grants ranging from $400,000 to $8 million. To be eligible, districts must have at least 50% of students living on Indian lands or have a parent in the Uniformed Services and meet applicable bonding-capacity requirements. Districts receiving Impact Aid 7003(b)(2) funds are also eligible.

Applications are due November 10, 2026.
