FIGMENT DC

FIGMENT DC Learn more about FIGMENT DC at http://dc.figmentproject.org FIGMENT’s vision for art looks past the white-walled galleries and into the realm of participation.

FIGMENT is a forum for the creation and display of participatory and interactive art by emerging artists across disciplines. FIGMENT began in July 2007 as a free, one-day participatory arts event on Governors Island in New York Harbor with over 2,600 participants. Since then, FIGMENT has grown significantly each year in number of projects, duration, participants, volunteers, fundraising capability

, exhibitions, locations, overall level of commitment and participation, and public support. Art is not just something that you stand still and quietly look at–it is something you participate in. You touch it, smell it, write on it, talk to it, dance with it, play with it, learn from it. Interactive art creates a dynamic collaboration between the artist, the audience and their environment. FIGMENT’s goal is to advance social and personal transformation through creativity, in the form of free participatory arts events and exhibitions. FIGMENT is uninterrupted by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. Selling or advertising goods or services is not permitted. Neither our artists nor our planners and staff are paid: everything that you see at FIGMENT is born from a simple desire to share imagination with each other and the public. In these challenging economic times, it is important that artists devise new ways to create, share, think, and dream about what is possible. FIGMENT is an alternative to many of the shortcomings of the commercial art world: exclusive, expensive, impersonal, untouchable and often simply boring.

We are excited to announce that we are now accepting entries for The City of Dreams 2019 Pavilion Design Competition!

FIGMENT has teamed with the Emerging New York Architects Committee (ENYA) of the American Institute of Architects NY Chapter (AIANY) and the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY) to host a competition to design and construct an architectural pavilion in Lighthouse Park on Roosevelt Island, the City of Dreams Pavilion. The 2019 pavilion will be our ninth City of Dreams Pavilion, and our first on Roosevelt Island.

The City of Dreams Pavilion will be a gathering place for people to meet, learn about the arts programs on Roosevelt Island, enjoy a performance or lecture, and enjoy this temporary structure. Our theme for the pavilion, the City of Dreams, points toward the future. If we imagine a future New York City where anything is possible, what would it look like? In our wildest and most optimistic dreams, what is the future of the city?

Any artists sticking around DC for Labor Day Weekend? The National Park Service reached out to the FIGMENT DC team to ask whether we knew folks who might want to bring interactive, community-focused art to their 100th Birthday Party.

The info below got lost in my inbox so it's about a week old- the event is September 1st, so if you're interested, contact them soon!

==== From Julie:

We would be looking for folks to have an activity from Noon to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 1st.
In terms of what is permitted or not, we may have to review some of this on a case by case basis but generally folks can't sell stuff on NPS land, and we can put stuff in that requires it to do in to the ground.

We may be able to give stipends for paying for materials for art activities and artists. A quick proposal with a simple budget via email would be helpful and then we let folks know if this is in the realm of possibility.

People can email myself [email protected] and/or [email protected] and we can set up a time for quick chat.

Know a group or an amazing individual in the Mid-Atlantic region that might have an idea to put together an awesome creative, civic-minded project for their community? The Mid-Atlantic Leadership Conference is happening in Baltimore on April 20-21, and thanks to the Burning Man Project, they've been allocated $1500 to distribute a Burners Without Borders Civic Ignition Grant.

They are interested in programs that create collaborations, produce direct actions, utilize several of the 10 Burning Man Principles, are reproducible, and creatively tackle local social problems. Programs that are solely based on artistic endeavors and do not have a community or civic aspect will most likely not be considered for funding. Funds should not be used for direct fundraising, chapter promotion efforts, or for paying people for their work. This grant gives anyone the opportunity to submit a collaborative, creative, and principle-focused project with a chance to win up to a $,1,500 grant.

Apply here by midnight EST on April 14th:

Dear FIGMENT Family,

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend!

I'd like to take this time to sincerely thank you for supporting FIGMENT in the past—as an artist, volunteer, donor or participant.

Particularly in these uncertain times, art is more important than ever, and I believe strongly that FIGMENT's mission of providing free, participatory arts events to local communities is making a difference—fostering expression, creativity, collaboration, mutual understanding, equality and empathy.

Would you consider making a donation today, on Giving Tuesday, to show your support again?

Our teams are already busy at work planning free, participatory events in San Diego, New York City, Dallas and many more cities for 2018. As you already know, we accept no corporate sponsorship of any kind—so your donation truly makes FIGMENT possible. And, as a 501(c)3 charity, all donations are tax deductible.
