We’re making the viral dot cake and uncovering a recipe that could cause chaos in higher ed:
🥣 1 cup of accreditation changes
🥄 2 tablespoons of political pressure
✨ A dash of anti-DEI policies
💸 A generous helping of threats to federal funding

For the second time, Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies subcommittee released a funding proposal that would eliminate subsidized loans for undergraduate students. Eliminating this program would make an undergraduate degree unaffordable for millions of students.

Subsidized loans differ from unsubsidized loans because they do not accrue interest while students are in school or for 6 months after graduation.

Here’s where YI has been lately! Texas State Director Travis Evans and D’Andra Daily, Policy & Research Coordinator, had the opportunity to present to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Austin Area and meet with a large group of youth and young adult development specialists working within their clubs to discuss policies that affect young people. The presentation introduced participants to Advocacy 101 and created an engaging space for learning and conversation. It was a great opportunity to connect with a group of about 60 young adults who are excited to move alongside Young Invincibles as we continue tackling important policy issues across Texas. In addition, we were able to table for sharing healthcare resources in Central Texas.

In Illinois, the Illinois Board of Higher Education and the Illinois Community College Board co-hosted their annual HOUSE Summit. The day-long, in-person event provides insight into supporting individuals experiencing homelessness and students with experience in foster care. Erick and Jorge from YI Midwest attended the event to hear best practices and solutions to support college students’ basic needs. YI co-leads the Illinois Student Basic Needs Task Force and is part of the Illinois Team of the College Student Basic Needs: Great Lakes (CSBN-GL) Community of Practice.

Travis Evans also join the Legal Defense Fund and other organizations at the UNT Denton CAC event, which brings students together to discuss how recent federal and state actions impacting higher education are affecting student mental health and campus experiences. Through discussion, presentations, and breakout sessions, participants will explore these challenges and connect them to broader policy trends. The event also equips students with tools and resources to take action at the campus, state, and digital levels.

Health care challenges are a reality for a lot of us. Lack of care, policy failures, and financial shortfalls create unnecessary barriers to health care for many young adults. We deserve health care that works for us.

As begins, we’re kicking things off by honoring an icon of the LGBTQ+ community: Barbara Jordan. Barbara Jordan was a true trailblazer. She was the first Black woman elected to the Texas State Senate, and the first Black woman from the South elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Throughout her historic career, she fought to expand the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to make sure the democracy worked for all Americans. As a q***r woman of color in leadership, she paved a path for the future of our country by breaking barriers at the highest level of Government. Here at YI, we are proud to continue her legacy through our work right here in Texas.

Student mental health challenges don’t disappear when the semester ends, and that's why we continue to fight for affordable therapy, accessible mental health care, and the support students deserve year-round.

California’s health care delivery system is stronger and more stable when everyone is covered and healthy. Without access to preventative care, already overburdened emergency rooms get busier with cases that could have been treated in a doctor’s office.

Self-care means taking time to do things that help you live well and improve your physical and mental health. Even small acts of self-care, like going for a walk, connecting with friends, or starting a skin care routine, can have a big impact.

Our DC office had some very special guests. We welcomed the youngest invincibles to our office for our Take Your Kid to Work Day. The fun did not stop in DC - our teams in Colorado, Houston, and Sacramento also brought future young invincibles to recent YI events. Gen Alpha will be ready to start their advocacy soon, and YI will be there to support them.
