CSA lands Greater Washington Community Foundation grant
The Metro Washington Council's Community Services Agency is the recipient of a Greater Washington Community Foundation grant to provide assistance to workers affected by the COVID-19 economic fall-out. "During this time of crisis and uncertainty, we are inspired by how our generous donors and community partners are stepping up to help us meet the evolving needs and challenges associated with the impacts of coronavirus on this region,” said Tonia Wellons, President and CEO of the Greater Washington Community Foundation. "CSA deeply appreciates the Greater Washington Community Foundation's confidence in our work to help Metro Washington workers in need during this unexpected challenge," said CSA Executive Director Sonte DuCote. For nearly half a century, the United Way of the National Capital Area https://unitedwaynca.org/ has served the metro Washington area by partnering with the Metro Council’s Community Services Agency (LINK) and other organizations that provide valuable resources and services to the community. "Our mission is to diligently work to offer solutions to the challenges facing our neighbors in need," said Rosie Allen-Herring, United Way NCA President and CEO, "which is why we are pleased to provide the Community Services Agency with a $20,000 grant to assist workers impacted by the COVID-19 economic crisis." Labor Quiz: What’s this sign all about?

Former Community Services Agency Executive Director Kathleen McKirchy spotted this intriguing sign Wednesday morning while passing through Joliet, Illinois. “At one point, Joliet, just outside of Chicago, had the second largest steel mill in the U.S.,” McKirchy writes. “Its rolled steel rails helped fuel the expansion of railroads in the late 1800's. Not sure what the sign is referring to; the only clues I found are that the building was dedicated in 1950 and the Will County Steelworkers Club was incorporated in 1945.”

CSA MENTORSHIP INITIATIVE EASES WAY FOR APPRENTICES

The journey to becoming a union apprentice became a little easier last week, as the Community Services Agency launched a one-year mentorship initiative for students in its Building Futures Construction Pre-Apprenticeship program. "We are all on amazing paths," mentor and Local 1900 member Lisa Kenner told nearly two dozen participants gathered in the Benning Road library. "And when we come together to share insight and experiences we grow so much more." "Mentors create lasting impact," said CSA Executive Director Sonte DuCote, "and we hope this initiative will provide tools to our students for years to come."
