Hope Fellowships A USAID-funded International Leadership Program committed to strengthening the role of women in the decision-making process in the Balkans.

The Hope Fellowship Program is the preeminent leadership development program in the Balkans, modeling the principles of leaders, learners and creators across the world. Graduate Hope Fellows are at the forefront of creating and securing democratic practice, economic development and an ethnically integrated society. The Hope Fellowship program is sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development and administered by the National Albanian American Council (NAAC). Initiated in 2001, Hope Fellowship program was born as a pilot program to champion the growth of emerging women leaders in Kosovo by offering Hope Fellows a 10-week leadership program in Washington D.C. To date, over 1,100 Hope Fellows have completed the program (140 of these fellows were trained in Washington, D.C.) and are actively engaged in leading new initiatives in their jobs, communities, and their governments in Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia and Montenegro.

Today, we mourn the passing of a true hero for Kosovo, Congressman Eliot Engel. 🕊️🇽🇰🇺🇸

Beyond his legendary work as the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and his decades of advocacy for Kosovo’s independence, we remember him as a steadfast champion of women’s empowerment.

Congressman Engel was a vital supporter of the Hope Fellowships Program. He believed deeply that for Kosovo to thrive, its women leaders needed to be at the decision-making tables. Through his support, many women in leadership positions in Kosovo found their voices, strengthened their skills, and built the bridges that connect our two nations today.

He often said that no country touched his heart quite like Kosovo. Today, our hearts are heavy as we say goodbye to a man who was more than a diplomat, he was family.

Rest in peace, Congressman. Your legacy lives on in the institutions we’ve built and the women leaders who continue to shape our future.
