John S. Mulholland Food Pantry

John S. Mulholland Food Pantry Central headquarters food pantry for JSM, serving the food insecure, working poor of Washington, DC.

This morning at 6:30 we began what we know will be a long and great relationship with Belair Produce, thanks to Steve Kemp introducing us to the owner, Buzz Berman. Buzz and I became fast friends because he understands customer service and relationships, something many businesses these days have forgotten — and he truly embraces our mission serving the food insecure. The owner of a company that puts 30 vehicles on the road every day delivered the first order himself, 30 minutes early and perfect.

One of our goals this year was to dramatically increase our fresh produce offerings to the families we serve. By delivering fresh, quality produce to us at competitive pricing with stellar service, Buzz also earned our considerable milk and egg business.

The result? Continued judicious spending of our donor dollars, increased efficiencies in JSM operations, and over 50% increase in the fresh produce we provide our families. There is no doubt now that John S. Mulholland provides the most extensive and nutritious variety of food available at any food pantry in our region. Hands down. The best. My Dad would want it that way — 100% or not at all.

Today, we begin our final, and busiest, week of our 13th Annual Lenten Food Drive.

Monday, we will receive delivery from St. Peter's Parish, Olney and pick up from Our Lady of Mercy Church Potomac, MD.

Wednesday, we will be at Merchants Capital on 9th Street NW and on Friday at Archbishop Carroll High School.

This weekend, we will be at Church Of The Annunciation, St. Augustine Catholic Church, St. Thomas Apostle Parish, St. Stephen Martyr Church, all in the District, as well as St. Mary's Catholic Church, Rockville and St Bartholomew's Church in Bethesda.

If you happen to be in one of these neighborhoods, be a Saint and drop off a few cans or packages of non-perishable food. If that is not convenient, you may make a monetary gift at MulhollandCharities.org, which will be used to purchase fresh produce, dairy and poultry/meat to augment the food collections.

We are all called to serve. We hope you will join us.

The FOP (Friends of Patrick) were out in full force tonight, unloading, sorting and shelving thousands of cans of food collected at Holy Trinity Catholic Church last night at our flagship pantry. Many thanks to, left to right, Hugh Lawrence, Matt VK Van Kleunen, Patrick Mulholland, Reese Vandenberge, Rob O’Haver and Will Smart. They did a superb job and we are grateful.

Milk and eggs morning before heading to the First Fruits Farm. Very busy Tuesday at your JSM Foundation.

Seems the food leaves the shelves much faster than we can replenish it. Truth is, our numbers of families have never been higher, and they are growing. We need your help if you can MulhollandCharities.org.

Summer in the City continues this weekend — we will be at St. Francis of Assisi in Derwood and St. Bartholomew’s in Bethesda. If you are in their neighborhood, be a Saint and drop off some non-perishable food. Or please help us with an online donation.

We have five pantries open this week. Tomorrow, St. Anthony at 12th and Monroe NE, Thursday at Covenant Baptist on South Capitol and Xenia Streets, SW, Friday at St. Thomas More on 4th Street SE and John S. Mulholland Food Pantry at 18th and Monroe NE, and Saturday at St. Vincent de Paul at South Capitol and M, SE.

I haven’t seen Daisy in a long time, her family back on their feet. She must around 11 now. Great memory. I hope she’s doing well.

So nice to see Daisy at the pantry this morning. I held her as an infant two years ago here and she is such a beautiful little girl now. So grateful to be able to help her family. One in four children in the District went without breakfast this morning; Daisy isn't one of them, thanks to you.

The very unglamorous side of what we do, constantly stocking and restocking, unloading and sorting. Great volunteer opportunities available for the summer.

John S. Mulholland has embarked on our 12th Annual Summer in the City campaign. JSM is the only organization in the Washington Metropolitan Region to conduct a major food drive in summer, when food insecurity is at its peak.

Scores of volunteers will once again participate in this effort, with a goal of 100,000 cans/packages of food by Labor Day.

Participating churches include Blessed Sacrament, St. Thomas Apostle, St. Stephen Martyr, Holy Trinity, St. Augustine, Annunciation, Cathedral of St. Matthew, and Our Lady of Victory — all in the District.

We will visit St. Peter’s in Olney, St. Paul’s in Damascus, Our Lady of Mercy in Potomac, St. Jerome’s in Hyattsville, St. Francis Assisi in Derwood, St. Bartholomew’s in Bethesda, Holy Cross in Garrett Park, St. Mary’s in Rockville, and four parishes in Silver Spring — Our Lady of Grace, St. Andrew Apostle, St. Bernadette’s, and St. John the Baptist.

Merchants Capital is among the corporations participating — churches and companies continue to be added to this effort daily. At John S. Mulholland, we know that hunger doesn’t take a vacation. That’s why we’re offering our full menu of food pantry items to the families we are privileged to serve, without interruption this summer and every summer. You can participate, too, with a monetary donation at MulhollandCharities.org
