Book: "Wrapped in Rainbows: The Life of Zora Neale Hurston" by Valerie Boyd

Recommended by: A.J. McClenon, 2021 In-House Artist-in-Residence and participating artist in the 2026 public art project "I’ll meet you there"

“Wrapped in Rainbows: The Life of Zora Neale Hurston, was a relevant read for me as someone who was born and raised in DC during a time when it could still be considered Chocolate City as Boyd journeys the reader through Hurston's hometown of Eatonville, Florida. While Eatonville was a town designed for and mostly by Black people, unlike DC, the shaping of a Black individual being surrounded by Black professionals, elders, and peers alike allows for such an individual to experience the power and nuances of Blackness that can be more convoluted (not impossible) in integrated spaces that centers whiteness. Hurston's foundational experiences allowed her work as a writer, anthropologist, and filmmaker to be led with sincere intentionality, making her work powerful for the historical Black Archive. This book feels very necessary for a residency in a Black neighborhood in our nation's capitol that once thrived on its majority Black population.”

\THE NICHOLSON PROJECT IS THRILLED TO ANNOUNCE OUR 2027 RESIDENTS!

Congrats to artists Dominique Muñoz, duo Ahmed T. Ragheb & Lily Ekimian Ragheb, Simone Baron, and Sangwoo Yoo, on being awarded In-House Residencies with a stipend, and 10-weeks of live and work space on-site, and to artists Omari Jesse and Zsudayka Nzinga who have been awarded Local Artist Studio Residencies with eight-months of studio space, a stipend and a culminating solo exhibition.

We had the pleasure of hosting another Care Workshop with artist, Monica Jahan Bose. After harvesting produce from the Nicholson garden, volunteers cooked and shared a nutritious meal.

This season's workshops have been a success with our new metal garden beds, funded by The Department of Energy and Environment !

Please help us say goodbye to our summer artist-in-residence Edgar Reyes! To close out his residency, Edgar, alongside chef Rosalyn Vera, organized an intimate dinner inviting local Latinx creatives for an afternoon of community and cultural exchange. Using plants from Nicholson's garden, Edgar led attendees in cyanotype printing, highlighting how traditional food, culture, and history are active sources of resilience in contemporary creative practices.
